So I need a 002 course for mixing, that 2 fold below 101, I'm almost in the "special needs" class.

I've checked this tutorial video (you might want to skip to 2:26)
BEAT MIXING TUTORIAL FOR THE TOTAL NOVICE DJ.

I'm using Mixxx | Free Digital DJ Software from [ www.mixxx.org ]

Mixxx is free, open source DJ software that gives you everything you need to perform live mixes. A problem I found with it is that clicking cueue while playing doesn't do what it's supposed to : go to cue point and play, it go to cue point and stop. :( Hopefully it's just because I'm uber noob and missed something ...

And I'm using the slow cool track (you might want to skip to 0:15)
Speedy J - Basic Design

My problem is that when I seem to have the tracks (the same track in the different players) beat matched, they're not in the same place (time in the track) so ... am I supposed to often go to cue and play so they're in the same place ? <-- confused emoticon

Thanks :)

not sure if this is exactly what you want to know...

99% of electronic music is made in patterns that are all multiples of 4; 16 bars for the intro, 8 bars for the drop, 32 bars for the main part, 8 bars for the 2nd drop, 32 bars for the 2nd half, 8/16 bar outro..

You need to learn (or get into the habit of just instinctively figuring out) where the 4s are.. things usually just end up lining up..

Following is the description of the video, which detail my issue.
beatmatch03-edited

Through Mixxx software, I loaded the same track on the two players (top and down) as seen on the screen shot beatmatch-speedy_j-basic_design , the first player (top and left) had a rate of +2.06 from the start and the second (bottom and right) started from +0.05 and brought back to the first one (+2.06) by the slider which you can see the interaction with the translucent red circle on the right side.

As the rate change, so does the difference between the track and the end, all there's left is a delay between the tracks.

The screen shot mentioned in the description is the following :

You really need to explain the problem more clearly..

If what I'm understanding is right, you have two copies of the same track loaded, one at +2.06 and one at +0.05..

you start them both playing, then adjust the 0.05 one to be 2.06 so that they match, but they're still not lined up..

You should have a feature of the software to "nudge" the track up in speed a little..

Think of it like two cars; they both leave the start line and one is going 80mph and the other is going 92mph.. After 10 seconds, the car going 80 speeds up so that it's also going exactly 92mph.. But it's still behind the other car - it needs to go faster than 92 to catch up to the car in the lead, THEN it can go back down to 92..

Usually, mixing software will have a button that temporarily increases/decreases the pitch when you click/hold it (in this case I think it's the TEMP buttons next to the pitch fader)

If not, then you could do it the manual way and just rely on the pitch slider.. a lot of DJs do that; you put the pitch slider faster until the tracks are lined up, then you go back and forth, narrowing down the exact point the fader needs to be set at.

It's called riding the pitch

k, thanks. sorry that I can't sum up the situation so clearly, I'm learning here.

not much of a BEAT MIXING TUTORIAL FOR THE TOTAL NOVICE DJ then ... I'll keep listening, perhaps some other will teach that.

I'll look around, I'm pretty certain I'd seen a Mixing For Dummies book somewhere.. should do a better job of explaining it..

I think the tempo slide and your ears are your best friend when it comes to beat matching live.
And rhythm should be built into you if you're already an avid music listener. Just know when to
drop the beat, and make sure it's every 4-8-16 bars. It's a lot of counting rly.

though Mixxx is a fun little linux program, it is a little faulty. maybe that's why you're having a hard time getting a grip on the visual part of mixing digitally with programs.

i prefer looking at the grooves of a record and using my ears, to seeing a waveform and watching little coloured sticks line up ... just my tastes :)

but again, i've fiddled w/ this program, and though it's cool, it's very basic & it's not perfect. you can't rely on the lines to tell you if the tune is beat-matched or not.

the best thing i did with it was mash-up a 2-Pac song with a Dj Producer hardcore track .. worked out pretty well, imo - lol
I'm feeling you up right now..
