So what's your take on this ? [ www.torrentech.org ]

I went to download another 2 albums from IDM, but for me, I felt that these were indistinguishable as either Ambient or IDM - it didn't specifically feel like any of the "dance" component of IDM was there, so I have a feeling that my definition may be a bit off. The other albums I got were Freescha - Freeschaland and Blamstrain - Ensi. I know nothing about these artists beyond what I heard in these albums.

So what is the best way to tell between what is IDM and Ambient?

my philosophical digression aside, my personal opinion (that of someone who listens to a lot of IDM & ambient) can provide some explanation, but as you will see every rule has a blatant exception:

ambient :
usually doesn't have percussion and any rhythm in it is likely going to be based on the instrument carrying the melody.

counter-example: biosphere often has a simple driving rhythm on songs i would consider ambient

the melodies are often drawn out and any "riff" or "line" that is identifiable, because it is repeated and thus has a definite beginning and end, is often 30-60 seconds in length for example.

counter-example - slowdive's album pygmalion in which the identifiable hooks or riffs are not longer than most other songs, but on most tracks there is only that 1 riff during the time span of 1-3,4 minutes

layers of either instruments or reverberations of selected instruments are used to keep your ear from latching on to any one "line" or "riff".

counter-example: rothko and their guitar/bass/bass set-up. they have songs without reverb with maybe only a single instrument playing a part

IDM:
rhythmically driven due to the fact that it originally was an offshoot of dance/club based styles. the rhythms and melodies tend to be more complex than your traditional mid-90s club/rave track

counter-example: way to many to name. seeing as how IDM has become so large in its application and common in usage, there really isn't much to say about it these days other than if you listen to enough music that is labeled as IDM by people who listen to everything and, more importantly, have been listening to electronic music for many years, you begin to understand what this vague name and notion can and cannot be applied to.

i think IDM these days really needs to be sub-divided when people discuss music if it is to be the soul means of communicating the style of an artist/song, but chances are no one does this. if you are describing an artist to someone and you are both well enough versed in electronic music, you tend to compare the artist to others and use them as reference points. for example "yeah this new artist i heard the other day was half Richard D. James-era Aphex Twin and half ISAN but more jazz influenced"

if you are looking for cut and dry descriptions of the genres, you will get many contradicting answers that won't really help you much.

my suggestion would be to ask what people's favorite IDM albums are, which will tell you a lot about their music tastes, and in the end allow you to make up your own mind as to what is IDM and what is ambient and, of course, what is both.

That's why a couple of times i told people
to put sdm(stupid dance music)beside my dj name
cause idm i just ..stupid!

I always found it so retarded that there's so many
names for music genres.

Like the term Worldbeat, last week a promoter asks me if he could put that beside my name i said etno-chill(which is retarded to LOL),all music is made on this world,
you can be inspired from beyond but...

boards of canada=ambient&IDM,first lp classified ambient trip-hop
aphex twin=most notable idm dude but did loads of ambient(ambient works..)
the orb=ambient, but more often identified as chill

IDM=prefuse 73,spooky,pole,plaid,square pusher,kid 606,si begg
caribou,amon tobin,

ambient=SEEFEEL,IRRISISTABLE FORCE,OTT,EAT STATIC,kaya project
interchill records,pete namlook,scape records...ect

i would go on&on cause its an interesting subject, but gotta go!
I'm feeling "o" reginal retar right now..

Well it's funny u ask because yesterday i got asked
to be the principal dj/BOOKER for a new monthly(maybe more?)
at a very nice place!

It will be a dancing night filled with all types of music
(electro,house,psy,tek,dubstep,ethno-tekno,new wave,no wave
dub,breaks,electro-gypsy,old-school hip hop,trip-hop,reggae-ska
d&b,jungle,euro-cheese,rare kitchy songs a la Bridget bardeau,
rai,afro-latin,funk,soul,rare rock,80's industrial,minimal & polka!!!

they asked me to start it up on january second, but i'm playing at
a party in st-fortunat(+2HOURS FROM MTL)that date(playing intense quebec on new years eve)

But ya i'm gonna restart with the help of good promoters and funky barmaids
nights like l.o.v.e are special because it's fun and because there are so many dj's
that don't play out,and not to many places for the +30 years to go out and dance to!

Thanx 4 the love DynV,if u have any sugestions i'm all ears(just look at any photo of mine lol)

I agree with you on this sabi.. Labeling a genre of music and being all about what type it is has a bad impact on the listeners because they figure this is this and that is that and then wont give it a chance if they got a bad first impression on something.

Newayz, theres brakets of styles that all fit together and its useless to start saying : this part is techno and that part is minimal and this is prog house.. FUK THAT.. Upbeat downtempo and broad style names are important the rest is baloney to me.. unless your pioneering into something there is no need for specific description to everything.. Tekno to me is all about what the music makes you feel in your belly..

PWET PWET!
I'm feeling nye party!!!! right now..
