You need to check out Dub Side of the Moon by The Easy Star All Stars.. they re-do the whole album in reggae, and this track has chopped-up jungle amens in it..

The whole album is incredibly well done.. like, if Pink Floyd would have been a reggae band when they did the album, that's exactly what it would have sounded like..

the version of Money on the album with people smoking a bong instead of cranking a cash register also is one of the best covers ever.
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

Pink floyd were ahead of their time<<

Or were they? Multi layered psychedelic experimental-intrumental segues or songs were common in that era, just listen to the instrumental part of '' whole lotta love '' of Led Zeppelin or Revolution 9 by the beatles.

I'd say that '' on the run '' by pink floyd is a awesome track, but it's not ahead of time. Dont get me wrong, pink floyd is an awesome band, but they clearly were a product of their own socio-cultural context.
I'm feeling at peace right now..

"Toccata" on the the brain salad surgery 12" from emerson lake and palmer is pretty insane.

i could'not find a video of the album version

Toccata

The instrumental "Toccata" is based on the Fourth Movement of Alberto Ginastera's 1st Piano Concerto, arranged by Keith Emerson with special synthesized effects; Carl Palmer wrote a percussion accompaniment [2] using newly-developed drum synthesizers. Ginastera's agent apparently did not care for ELP's rendition and wasn't going to grant the publishing rights. Emerson, however, contacted Ginastera himself, who liked it and personally arranged for clearance. "Toccata" also gained fame as the theme to the New England cult TV show Creature Double Feature.

I beg to differ

Pink Floyd were using electronics way before bands like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, but thats besides the point

To put it differently, Pink Floyd were making wierd instrumental electronic tracks long before anyone else

So in the context of modern day electronic music, they were ahead of their time for sure

Would have loved to have heard the record they did after ;)

[ en.wikipedia.org ]

After the success of The Dark Side of the Moon, the band were unsure of their future direction and worried about how they would be able to top that record's huge popularity. In a return to their experimental beginnings, they began work on a project entitled Household Objects, which would consist of songs played literally on household appliances. Instruments consisted of old hand mixers, rubber bands stretched between two tables, wine glasses, etc. However, the planned album was soon shelved after the band decided that it was just easier and better to play the songs on actual musical instruments. No finished recordings of these sessions exist, however some of the recorded effects were put to use on their next album

Yeah you're right as usual. I suppose that before Pink Floyd there was no electronic music. All that stuff I learned about 30's electroacoustics and musique concrète was probably a lie.

BTW they used the Synthi A (suitcase model) to create that track, a device they were using since Meddle. The first time they used their synths to that degree was on the track "One Of These Days" which opens this album.

Before that epoch they were doing all sorts of weird synth sound over the bizarre orchestrations of Syd Barrett, original member and songwriter/singer of the group. Like many 60's freakout artists they were highly influenced by Acid Jazz (also already using electronics such as tape delays prior to PF) and the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen, much like the Beatles, who were also dabbling in tape music.

So I guess that if you were to say all that in a more educated manner, many of the psychedelic sounds of the sixties were influenced by the electronic experimentations of the late 19th century to 1940's, although most people had not heard synthesizers prior to their usage in psychedelic and progressive rock, when they became a more salient technique.

So yeah, I mean I love Ummagumma too, but the Floyd were basically just rock and roll dudes playing with fancy instruments created by electroacoustics nerds as far as their experiments are concerned.

I just wanted to point out... Stockhausen and Xenakis were doing all this stuff in the early 60's, and John Cage dropped the first turntable track in the 30's.

ELP wrote some pretty crazy stuff but according to everyone in my father's generation when they would play live Emerson would be between a gigantic Buchla and a miniMoog, and he would basically just play with the ribbon control on some other device, set off pyrotechnics, and basically be like Tiesto in front of his machines, because most of those tweaks are impossible to reproduce except by tape. The old modular synths are notorious for inconsistency. You could leave them at the same settings and the sound would slowly deteriorate because of the nature of transistors.
