Rakoon you will most likely buy something that only the final touches was made by a Québecois on something that was 90-95% made by some dirt poor workers.

With the actual law, final processing counts i the "made by". This worries me greatly with food and nutriments.

Well, let me say this.

X²O sells cool stuff but it's biodegradable.
You wear it twice, wash it, then it's gone.

the most stuff you'll find made in quebec/montreal using local fabric and put together localy is gonna cost you an arm and a leg and isn't cheap winter stuff..

Montreal puts out a ton of poly-lycra stuff that absolutley sucks at keeping out the wind/cold, and we also make sports stuff (hockey/soccer jerseys), which is also not the greatest..

NAFTA totally fucked things up for local companies; everyone that makes clothes imports NAFTA-aproved fabric that was made in a sweatshop in india for $2/meter (factoring in employee salary) whereas to make the same fabric here it comes out to $9-10/meter, as our minimum wage is higher than india/china, and we get harsher winters, so the companies have to pay more heating and electricity.

You want made-in-canada/montreal stuff, go shop on Chamabell street, it's about the best you're gonna do (and if you pull out cash to pay before they ring it up there's a good chance you won't pay tax)

Oöm ethikwear - [ www.oom.ca ] (organic cotton comes from india, soon to be certified fair trade, and clothes are manufactured in quebec)
American Apparel - not made in quebec but at least it is sweat shop free. the clothes are made in LA and the workers are paid decently.
I'm feeling psy-minded right now..

not if you're looking for ethically made clothing. it's one thing to have clothes that are durable while you know it's been made by people who have a hard time having enough to eat because they get paid nothing for making the clothes... and just one guy keeps all the money to buy himself twenty six cars and a helicopter and sixteen houses :p
that is a lot less likely to happen when the clothes are made in quebec, or another 'developed' country.
also the whole thing about buying local saves a lot of energy in transportation in the end.
but really it all depends on your values. some people don't give a shit about things like that, and i understand. but for those who care, well there are companies that fill that demand :)

I'm guessing you didn't read my post, then, considering that the first like you posted was one with fabric that comes from india..

You DO realise that it's not just the manufacturing of the clothes that can have sweatshop conditions, right? Free Trade/NAFTA is absolute bullshit, it just means that people in third world countries can get "certified" NAFTA and then hire a bunch of kids for 2 cents a day to run the machines (which is what happens)

And it actually costs MORE to do things over here than to get them from over-seas. The cost of one trip gas-wise is nothing compared to heating a building for our winters, paying our rents, paying our minimum-wage employees, etc..

5 meters of fabric made in india costs way less than 5 meters of the exact same fabric in quebec, and NAFTA is actually KILLING our local industries because of that; companies like ROOTS CANADA get all their yarn from India/Pakistan and assemble the clothes here so that they can put "Made in Canada" on them) but absolutely every bit of their clothing has at some point or in some form been in a sweatshop, 100% guarantee.

Well considering Ive had friends work in "sweat shops" right here in canada. because they couldnt work legally

I work in a job place where I am very underpaid. People are screamed at left and right, threatened, fired without just cause, snooped upon, lied to, amongst a few negatives.

I think that whats bad for us may not be the same for others if they dont know what a good atmosphere is

Whos to say working in a sweat shop , is something they feel bad about? Maybe going from sucking dick for a dime to working in a sweatshop is a step up for them. But we cant see that in our society.

Just a thought
but also another though is how can you generalize that canadas dosnt have sweat shops?
Im sure evetually in canada they will get caught due to stricter laws enforced but still.
I'm feeling the sun! right now..

Oh it's got some, I've seen them, my dad works in the needletrade, that's why I know what I'm talking about.. There are some sweatshops here, but a large majority of the places aren't that bad.. Yeah it's not the idea job sitting there sewing clothes for 8 hours a day, but most places actually pay better than minimum wage.

i read your post... better have clothes that are 50% sweat shop than 100% sweat shop, if you are someone who thinks about that stuff.

so, right, they don't grow cotton in Quebec anyways, so clothes can't be 100% made in Quebec.

i've seen a documentary about what Monsanto do to cotton production in India, and if i can go organic, i'm happy to not be encouraging this evil corporation. and fair trade just makes sense, i mean, even though people say there is corruption in this system. there is corruption everywhere. i prefer to go for the lesser evil.

i say i... but i don't do that actually... except for like three or four pieces i own. i still think that companies who take the effort to be as ethical as possible ought to be encouraged, even though it's not all pure.
