Here is an old proposal to the city... Obviously things will change but it will give you an idea of the next project...

-------------------------------------------------

THE MCAP FOOD RALLY FUND-RAISER PROJECT

OUR PLATFORM

Montreal is one of the poorest cities in Canada. Our poverty rate is the highest of the major city centers, at 41.2% . Children, women and seniors are the groups most hardly hit by this harsh reality. With high unemployment, low wages, and discrimination, it is easy to point fingers and place blame on government and big business but we believe that actions speak louder than words. The Montreal Coalition Against Poverty (MCAP) is a group of dedicated individuals who seek to unite the citizens of this city in the fight against poverty. The group is headed by its founder, Noah Gitelman, and has thus far 16 members who have been volunteering their time and energy to the cause. Canada is said to have one of the highest standards of living in the world yet people in one of its major metropolitan cities, Montreal, go hungry every day. Food is a basic necessity for life. As such, we believe it is of outmost importance that we should do as much as we can to provide it to those who need it most.

This is why our coalition is organizing this rally – to educate and promote awareness and, most importantly, to collect non-perishable food items to directly aid those in need. We have the support of the following people:

• Musicians and disc jockeys
 Jean-Patrice Remillard (Pheek)
 G O’Brian
 DJ Dave
 Ice MC
 Franky Fontaine
 More to be announced…
• Guest speakers
 A member of the Sun Youth Organization
 Noah Gitelman, MCAP founder
 Barbara Brooks, Masters Degree of Education from McGill University
 Marc Starecky, MCAP member
 More to be announced…
• Sound engineers

These people are willing to donate their time, equipment, and talents free of charge for this worthy cause.

We have met and discussed our idea with Manuel Peris, Director of Communications at Sun Youth. He has shown great interest in supporting our cause. Sun Youth will provide us with volunteers who will be on hand at the event to collect the donations for distribution to the poverty-stricken citizens of this city.

We have also met with Constable Robert Brouillard of Station 20 (Ville-Marie Sud-Ouest), who was very enthusiastic about our idea and agreed to pledge his support in compliance with the city.

However, in order to attain our goals, we need the support of City Hall, to provide us with the use of one of its public parks in the downtown core so that we may help those who need it most.
DATE AND PROPOSED LOCATION OF EVENT

Phillips Square
Saturday, July 22nd, 2000, 10am to 10pm as the tentative date

DESCRIPTION OF EVENT

The proposed non-profit event will be a dance rally in order to raise non-perishable food items for distribution to the many people living below the poverty line. We also wish to promote awareness about the poverty situation that exists in Montreal through speeches and informational pamphlets. We will be setting up a DJ booth with turn-tables and other necessary equipment. Large speakers and amplifiers will be placed in various areas within the location. The Sun Youth collection bins will be located in a visible area of the park with Sun Youth volunteers to monitor the donations.

With the growing support of the Montreal electronic music scene through the many volunteer DJ’s, sound engineers and musicians, we expect to draw a large crowd of people who will come to dance, listen to upbeat music and donate food for those less fortunate.

Within our member list, we have two computer specialists who will be preparing the web page, flyer, and informational pamphlet to advertise the event. We will also communicate with television networks such as Global to place an entry in their Community Calendar segment and newspaper publications such as Hour/Voir and Montreal Mirror for advertising. We will proceed with these plans upon authorization from the City.

Through the use of music and dance we hope to unite the people of this city for an excellent cause.

REQUIREMENTS

• Permission to host this event at Phillips Square on July 22nd, 2000
• The use of the electrical sockets located in the vicinity for the sound equipment
• Some funding would be greatly appreciated to cover printing costs of flyer and pamphlets to advertise the event and provide information, as well as funding for transportation costs of the necessary equipment

We hope that as conscious minded people you will grant us these requests so that we may be able to educate and aid those in need.
