I've noticed alot of people here really don't like paying alot for their parties and most promoters don't really put alot of enegry into their events deco.
Local deco is fine obviously but the true masters come from overseas and nothing really comes close to their work or the visual effect it has on an environment.
The trade off is it does bump up the price of an event, often times comparable to the fee of a sweet headliner...

So heres my question to you: How important do you guys feel proper deco is for an event?

Like take Fluorobotanics for instance who will be showing at Mainframe this coming 28th of November..

I love how a thread about 'deco' is just a thinly veiled attempt at promoting an event in the General section.

Well I was doing my rounds this morning and it came to mind... I needed a quick example to back it up cuz I realise alot of the new party goers probably have never had the opportunity to attend a really well decorated party yet and therefore don't really have a proper reference point in mind.
Quit being so paranoid and righteous I'm just trying to have a conversation here. GOSH! -:P

I'd pay on average 5 $ for deco. And by deco i do mean artwork, and not video projections.

yeah, it's like having redbull AND guru at the same event. it's just a bonus. yeah, it's fun when your blitzed off acid but i don't think people will have more fun at a party because it looks good.

it is a definate plus that i would always add to parties i'd throw but don't expect the people to pay more for international deco artists, cause they won't !!!
I'm feeling open for suggestions right now..

Deco helps, but unless its done amazingly well that it blows your mind (like Shambhala for instance), its not going to be something people are going to pay a lot more for. I mean, most of the deco I've seen at raves is limited to a hanging shit from the ceiling, cool artwork on pillars and in corners, and maybe a little bit around the dj booth. Its fun when you walk in....but it doesnt directly make the rave experience that much better.

Mind you though, if the decos good, it puts you in that much better of a mood when you walk in, so I guess it gets the rave off on the right foot, so I suppose it might indirectly make the rave expereince that much better.

That said, I love good decor. It fun to gaze at when your high and when your sober, it makes a really good conversation starter, and it puts me in a really good mood. Like I figure the price Im willing to pay for a normal rave (ie non-special occasion, non music festival, local djs, in the city) breaks down something like so:

0-10 for decor
0-20 for venue
0-20 for other being sound system, promo team, organization, djs

So for an average rave Im looking to pay 20-25$. So, for an average rave with amazing decor, id be willing to pay 25-30$. Granted most raves are in the 10-20$ range, so Im probably willing to pay a slight bit more than most.
I'm feeling empty right now..

yeah, I dunno, but for me, deco doesn't even register unless you're really transforming a room into something else. Some fancy paintings on the wall are just that; fancy paintings on a wall.

OOOOOooOooOoo they're UV reactive! Big whoop. Anyone can hit the internet for a couple dozen 'psychadelic' posters and put them up everywhere, got some of those string-things (which, admitedly, DO look cool), a couple of black-lights and there you go, you've got every psy party I've ever seen.

You want to do something REALLY impressive, have a theme of some sort (and by theme, I mean, like, say, a kitchen, a graveyard, a cave) and make the space actually look like what you're going for; totally transform the room, as if it was a movie set.

I don't care where the 'deco artist' comes from, but at the end of it all, all you're really gonna get is some 'psychadelic' art put up all over the place, some white strings, and some blacklights, and that shit only really impresses people coming to their first party, or on more psychadelics than you'd safely ever want to take in one sitting.
I'm feeling over 9000 right now..

I totally hear what you guys are saying.. I didn't really mean for this thread to be purely about psychedelica I just meant deco in general (the psy reference was just easier for me).. but what about shit like a hardcore party with some totally industrial metal gear deco or a dubstep or a hardcore party with like the dj spinning from the bucket of one of those giant yellow caterpillar trucks etc.. like appropriate themed deco for the style of music playing..
I'm feeling soma right now..

The venue itself takes a great part of the deco
Except lights effect, I don't think we need something else

i think deco becomes important these days if you're using a venue that's been used several times already, to make it different. Deco is great, if it's well done and thought out, and only if everything else is up to par (if you're sound sucks, don't bother putting in a lot of $$$ for the place to look good, trying to fool everyone). But, as mentioned, lights and VJs are usually good enough.

Any trippy looking visuals are a bonus in an event, though, in the past, it was a regular part of parties, but priorities were forcibly changed... .. .

deco brings you to a time and place that only exists right here and now. a room is a room, it always stays the same. it's borderline boring, unless the people become the deco themselves, like the kandi ravers... now that is fun to look at, add deco to this and your eyes overdose... ;)

i think that good deco includes 3d stuff as well as paintings, because only paintings don't change the place enough, unless they are shaped and used differently than just hangings... (kinda like punkadelic @ eclipse 2004, that was awesome!)

fluorobotanics are pretty crazy i love their stuff. but i've also seen people pay for foreign artists that only brought two or three paintings to hang by the dj booth (see samadhi 2006). i mean... you gotta be sure that the money you pay is worth the art they bring... though i don't think that is a problem with fluorobotanics.

would i go to a party more because of the deco... i think i would, but i'm really a fan of 3d stuff. i find it boring when i can look at all the paintings on the internet before going to the party and know exactly what it will look like. i love surprises, i love the shock of going into a room with no expectations and finding out this... really... crazy looking environment. and then paintings make it all complete, because staring at blank walls is... meeh... :p

ahhh forgot. i've read some stuff by teilhard de chardin where he says something like "fill up the five senses and the mind takes off". so. yeah. i think the whole experience includes smells, touch and taste as well. ;)
I'm feeling meeeeow right now..
