Intoccabile - DB Vaig, you have been involved in the underground scene as a dj and as a promoter for many long years. My question is : did you start as a dj, as a promoter, or perhaps as both, seeing as these roles often go hand in hand ?

Db Vaig - I actually started out back in '97 in Toronto as a promoter. Sometime around 2000 or so, I hooked up with my boys in the Slingshotcrew, and started throwing loft parties in old montreal. We were a pretty dynamic trio actually, Makrodot was the dj, Gascious Moustacious was the vj, and I was in charge of promotion. Makrodot was instrumental in me learning to spin, however the big push came in 2003. Makro was getting deported as his student visa was long expired, so it was back to Syria for my boy. At that time the only real way to get the jungle tunes I was lovin' was on vinyl, mp3 rips were few and far between. That spring I got myself some decks, started collecting and dbvaig was born.

Intoccabile - When did you start dj'ing exactly ?

Db Vaig - Spring 2003.

Intoccabile - Describe your best experiences as a dj in this city and abroad.

Db Vaig - Hmmm let's see. Abroad, Antwerp November 2003, I show up at this "ragga-jungle" party at club Napolean after walkin in circles for hours. I get there, really nice space, and all these junglists jonesin for an amen...for 3 hours the dj was only playing reggae, I step up, drop Krinjah's BAMBAM, and suddenly the place came alive...Probably like my 4th real gig ever, and I had 200 kids screaming for more. Next dj on played Drum n Bass...If I hadn't showed up at this party there would not have been any ragga jungle, more like ragga, and then jungle.

In Montreal, OMG, too many...let's see if I can summarize. EZ Rave halloween at bluedog, getting a warning from the cops for the BASS when we had Skream play there, EZBAKE Krinjah edition this summer, by far the best BAKE ever. Last summer's plateau summer tour, 4 months 4 bars awesome times!

Honetly the entire first year of EZBAKE was awesome, the fact that back then we were able to keep the club bumping, and create such a solid night on a Monday. That was balls yo!

Intoccabile - Describe your current sound... what should people expect at the Passeport next thursday ?

Db Vaig - These days I am taking a much more mellow approach to jungle. I am a crate digger, so I like to pull out the old soulful jungle tracks, the anthems, the tracks that everyone knows, and no one plays any more. At the Passeport, expect a bit more on the ragga-breaks tip and as mentioned, some old skool anthems. It'll be different dropping some of the breakz tracks for sure.

I think when people hear the name db Vaig now, they kinda know what to expect. I mean sure I used to drop a lot of hard core ragga jungle, but I think these days my name really is synonymous with old skool jungle and ragga.

Otherwise, a lot of dbvaig sets you hear at some of my current nights, is more on a funk/soul/ska/reggae/souljazz/lovers rock tip.

Intoccabile - Where were you, musically speaking, before becoming the infamous Db Vaig ? What were you into ?

Db Vaig - I was into so many different sounds in those days, I still have a very eclectic taste in music. Those days, a lot of punk, hip hop, dancehall, jungle for sure. I really only only got into electronic music in '96 or so. Was also a huge blues fan back in those days (who am I kidding I still am).

Intoccabile - Could you describe your initial reaction upon hearing jungle ?

Db Vaig - It was at a party in Toronto, and I heard this sound in the second room, at that time we were into a lot of Rotterdam hardcore, and trance and shit...And I hear this Mc, and this crazy sped up broken beat, I loved it instantly, I remember hearing the MC say "JUNGLISTS LEMME HEAR YA MEK SOME NOISE 4 DA DJ" and thus was able to put a name to it. After that party I was asking everyone (to the point of being annoying) for jungle.

Shortly after that someone tuned me in to Marcus Visionary's radio show on CKLN, man every sunday I was bumpin that out in my dorm room, much to the chagrin of my house mates.

Intoccabile - In what kind of musical context did you start you dj career ? What was happening, musically speaking, in this city when you started playing out ?

Db Vaig - Well my first couple of paid gigs in MTL were with the idj crew back in 2003, but I think seriously my dj career really got its start in Belgium, and well I didn't get known until the launch of EZBAKE Mondays. Back in 2003 man this city was bumpin party wise. 'Nuff loft parties every weekend. Saphir Thursdays and Bluedog Fridays were the 2 most happening club nights, so much was happenin in those days. I was throwing my own loft jams at that time as well, and was just getting active in the jungle community. I seriously as mentioned earlier, got my start at djin' out of necessity. When Makro had to leave Canada, well there was no one specific dj that was spinning the sounds I wanted to hear. 'Nuff people was pushin dnb / neurofunk / nu skool ragga-jungle, there were many varied jungle sounds in the city, but not exactly what I was lookin to hear on the regular.

Intoccabile - My belief is that the history of the local Dubstep scene needs to be rewritten. The Ez Bake crew has been promoting, pushing the sublow and dubsteps sounds years before the appearance of entities such as Komodo dubs, the dubstep experiment, fyutchaflex events, etc. How did people react back in the days when you guys started playing sublow and dubstep at your events ?

Db Vaig - Man back in 2005 aside from yourself no one even knew what this sound was over here. Kiffah came back from the UK with this new sound. The ravers kinda got it right away, but I remember one person saying it sounded like intellectual music for spoiled rich kids. Most peoples reactions was that it was too slow. More than enough people though got their first dose of the sound at the BAKE, and fell in love with it. It was definitely a hard sell at first, but since the BAKE was a mish mash of flavours, so if you didn't like one sound, you knew it was gonna change within the hour. After Kiffah brought Skream over though people got their first real taste of it, and I think that had a big impact on the sound taking off. Then guys like Blake and SASE picked up on the sound (I'd mention this kid name Punanny Bizness, but he was into the sound from day 1 ;) ) and fast FWD 2 yrs later and this sound has exploded everywhere

Intoccabile - The people attending the Ez Bake mondays at the blue dog were treated to a mix of Jungle, dubstep and breaks. Why this specific combination exactly ? Do you feel these sounds go hand in hand ?

Db Vaig - Absolutely. When Kiffah and I started the night we wanted it to be a night dedicated to all genres of broken music. So there were also hip-hop / dancehall and funk elements involved as well. Slowly we phased out the dance hall, and only did the hip hop on rare occasions, and started to do what we knew. Jungle and Breaks work hand in hand, Breaks and Dubstep work well, Jungle and Dubstep, well hell I mean Dubstep is a progression from the early Jungle producers. I absolutely feel that the three sounds are all very complimentary.

Intoccabile - And speaking of the Ez Bake crew... how did you guys get together ?

Db Vaig - Well lets get into my time machine here. Winter 2005, some douchebag that I knew through my roommate wanted to start a night at bluedog to pick up chicks, or drink for free, or some other douchey reason to start a night. He approached me about providing the music. At first the night went by the horrible name of Icey Mondays.

I had met Kiffah back in 2003, I had actually booked him and Milton Clark at a few loft parties back then. Kif played my going away party, and I just thought he was a really solid guy. Him an I both got back from Europe pretty much around the same time, and I remember he was selling off some of his old records. So as I was going through his collection I asked him about starting a night with me. He jumped on board immediately. At the time we had another dj by the name of Atiq that took care of the hip hop portion of the night. The initial night with the douchebag promoter, only lasted like 2 weeks, and Bluedog shut it down. Douchebag folded, I got back in touch with bluedog, convinced them to give us the night back, got rid of Atiq, and Kiffah brought Dysklo on board as our resident breaks boy, and one night over pint glasses at Miami bar the name EZBAKE was born (we still thank Viv for that one). Somehow throughout that summer Dysklo brought Dialect in as our little brother. When Dysklo left us to go back to Fredericton, Dialect stepped up to the plate in a huge way. He is seriously one of the most talented kids I know, and soo much fun to work with. DeeBass became for awhile a part time EZBAKER as well, but EZBAKE is and will always be from here on out Dialect, Kiffah and dbVaig. Even now after almost 4 years of working together we stilll get along so well. Best team I have ever and most likely will ever have the pleasure of working with.

Intoccabile - Tell us about your current and future projects.

Db Vaig - Been working on a lot of solo projects recently, trying to cater to the offfice folks and the 5 à 7 crowd. Up until just recently I been runnin my own monday night up at BARinc. (the old Missy bar). Really a nice chill nite, was dj'in behind the bar, mostly funk ska and reggae. The bar recently decided to go in another direction, and as such I have temporarily moved it back to Edgars Hypertaverne where I was working last summer. "Le Meeting du Lundi" will have a new permanent home as of August 10th at a gorgeous supper club up on MT Royal called Nuevo between St denis and St-hubert).

I am really stoked about the new space, nice big garage door that opens on avenue Mt Royal, huge terrasse in the back, wikkid supper menu, and some very fine alcohols...Every Monday from 6pm - midnite(ish).

Also on Fridays I am running another 5 à 7 type night at les Pas Sages (951 Rachel E). This is also a night that up until recently I was doing at BARinc. Pretty much the same concept as "Le Meeting". A lot of peeps just wanna hear good tunes in a chill space, but aren't into the club scene. Starting this actually this comin friday Aug 8th 5pm - 10 pm.

Now on the EZBAKE tip, well. We are currently planning a couple of things. Next EZBAKE will be Sat Oct 4th at Les Pas Sages. Expect the same great EZBAKE flavour...guest is still a TBA. Also in the works though and a much bigger endeavour is the EZBAKE 4 yr Anniversary party Saturday Feb 7th.

We just gettin the ball rollin on this one, but let me just say breakz heads best prepare, cyuz this one gwan be HUGE! Can't say much more on that one yet, details will be available at the OCT BAKE for sure.

Intoccabile - That's it ! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions !

Db Vaig - Werd anytime mang!
I'm feeling nuclear right now..
