not necessarily...you need to ask the seller
ive often ordered from ebay
even from china, uk, states...
they only charge you the shipping fees...but when they give it you, they usually include all the taxes and everything in it...
..but ask the seller just to be sure.
I'm feeling nkotb right now..

i think customs rules are slightly complicated. the general rule is that if you have the sender label it as a gift worth less than 50$, then there is no nothing to pay.

but it is a bit hard to do that with something brand new worth 500 bones... so there, it will depend on where it is manufactured. if it is made in the states or mexico, then because of nafta, i believe there is no duty.

also, depending on how it is couriered, (i.e. fedex, ups, u.s post) there might be a "brokerage" fee which is just for the paper work of getting it across the border. on top of any potential duty crap.
I'm feeling feelings right now..

if its "ups, dhl, or fed ex" ou WILL pay charges, if its by canada post, you have like 1 chance on 5 to pay.

well thats what happens when i ordered vinyls or anything by ebay or shops (range from 5$ to 1200$)

You have to get the seller to specify to customs that the parcel is a gift. Or get him to declare the item in at a fraction of the price (sucks if the item gets lost in the mail). One way or the other, you will probably have to pay the provincial sales tax.
I'm feeling misty right now..

Its completely random based on the custom official working. Ive been charged duties of up to 200% (200 on a 100$ purchase), and ive paid as little as zero. It just comes down to dumb luck.

Ask the seller if he can mark it as a gift...it reduces the probability of being charged customs
I'm feeling :'( right now..

exactly. new or not, I always had a deal with people selling me record shipments. they would say that they were a relative, and that it was a gift of zero dollars value. I once got a shipment of 75 really valuable records shipped to me by my hookup in England, which I paid about 500 bucks for. it was split into 2 packages, and customs never even opened it up. paid no duty.

the downside is that if that massive shipment, God forbid, gets lost or damaged en route, we've claimed it as being worth nothing... that does not bode well for compensation. but whatever, in all the countless shipping i've done, i've only ever had 2 records damaged and none lost =)

Taxes you can get back, but you must apply. I had that with records ordered from the states and netherlands, canadapost would charge me at the door, but at the same time told me how to apply to get my $ back. As for duty, there are certain items (anything photography related) where there is NO duties whatsoever. I'm sure you could find a list. As for labeling shit as a 'gift', a lot of vendors will not do it and even then, you'll still pay. On top of duties, you'll be hit with a brokerage fee, since you were not there to pay the duty as your parcel crossed the border so the tab is automatically picked up by whatever broker, you have no choice in the matter.

About "gifts"

Items that qualify as a "gift"

For an item to qualify as a "gift", another person must send it to you personally and must include a card or other notice indicating that it's a gift.

* If you receive an imported gift by mail and it's worth $60 CAN or less, you don't have to pay duty or tax.
* If the gift is worth more than $60, you must pay duty and tax on the amount over $60 CAN.
o For example, if a relative sends you a gift worth $200 CAN, you must pay the applicable duty, the GST or HST, and any PST on $140 CAN.

Please note:

* The $60 CAN gift exemption does not apply to:
o goods such as tobacco, alcoholic beverages, or advertising material
o items sent by a business, company, or association.
* As well, the $60 CAN exemption that's available on gifts cannot be combined with the $20 CAN exemption that's available on all items.
I'm feeling gettin more ink soon right now..

yup. customs agents are fickle creatures. I once got one record shipped up from Breakbeat Science, that was worth about 25 bucks in total including shipping - with the receipt inside. they still slapped on a 20 dollar duty on it, which I had to pay. true, there was some kind of appeal process for it, but fucked if I ever got around to it. oh well - the number of times I have evaded the duty more than makes up for it =)
