 Coolness: 93470 | So I got a wireless router, and i thought Id be nice and leave it unsecured. I figured neighbors would use it when theyre in a bind or the random guy needs wifi or whatever. Cuz Im a nice guy. Anyways, these asshole neighbors of mine, are using it 24/7 and its slowing down my connection.
Is there any way to keep the speed of the router quick and getting the neighbors off it? I would put a password on it, but it slows down the connection? |

 Coolness: 685565 | I think that there should be an option for doing all of that (restricting access/bandwidth to specific MAC Addresses) in the config menu for your router, but without knowing what type and what modle, that's about as specific as I can get. |

put a wpa pwd on it and use mac filtering for extra security If your connection is slow it is most likely because you are a.) using p2p software (or your neighbours are) b.) you have spyware c.) there could be an issue with noise at that point call tech support and have them tweak your connection d.) you have a defective telephone cable (are you on dsl or cable) or you perhaps have a dsl filter on your modem (duh remove it that is for the phone) e.) check the placement of your router, good rule of thumb the higher up you place it the better, and not near any other electronic devices, windows etc. Also try logging into the router and tryin a different channel if it is slow on channel 11 try 9, or 6 or 1, which ever gives the best use that. its all good to be nice, but if you have a cap on your bandwidth your genorosity is gonna get you in some financial bullshit, especially if your neighbours are on 24/7, secure your network ASAP Mise À Jour » Kishmay_Pinas a écrit sur Thu 19 Jun, 2008 @ 7:03pm point c.) should be your last resort |

 Coolness: 93075 | yar, u must modify ur router password... so it isnt default or system or password... and pasword protecting your wireless network doesnt affect your connection, unless you don't have the password :)

Personally, I would never let anybody use my wifi. Hell, whenever I'm stealing someones signal, I abuse the shit out of it! btw adding a password would slow down your connection if it is encoding and decoding the signal to insure that any stray wireless signals cannot be intercepted and processed... it shouldn't slow it down enough to notice though, unless you're maxing out the connection... in which case of course it's going to slow down |

as to what makes me think that? oh, just a bachelors in computer science (pending) but you are right in saying that it's not the password itself that is slowing anything down... |
