I accidentally knocked my external drive over last night, now its making weird repetitive grumbling noises and wont show up when I plug it in. Its usually my backup drive but I had to install a new HD just last week and havn't had time to transfer back some of the data... are there any shops that specialize in data recovery off broken drives or anything else I could do before I consider the last 3 years of work a total write off?
I'm feeling hr, br, fr, sr right now..

Hm, interesting... perhaps soaking it in some honey will help its insides.
I find a bit of rhum and pinch of salt help a bit too.

data recovery is really, really fucking expensive, especially if it's hardware damage causing it, as they have to open up the drive in a steril room and mount the platters onto special gear to read the data. You're easily looking at over 1000$.

Somebody told me that putting your hard drive in the freezer for a while and then spraying it with a fire extinguisher is supposed to help. No, I didn't try it. Drive is still dead though so sometimes I think it couldn't hurt.

I had a similar problem. Screwhead is right, if it's hardcore hardware failure then your looking at about 1000$.

You could try a few things... I've actually heard that putting it in the freezer works sometimes(I wouldn't spray it with a fire extinguisher though). The theory behind it is that the disc inside the hard drive might be hitting something or something might be stopping it from spinning properly and freezing it would make the metals and all the wonderful stuff inside the hard drive like... condense sort of?

Anyways, if that does work it should only really work for like 15 minutes, so you gotta move your data FAST!

I wouldn't bother bringing it to microbytes or future shop though. If it's making noise like that it's a pretty sure sign of hardware failure. Your regular shop can't do shit about that, there just gonna hold on to your hard drive for like 2 - 3 weeks, do nothing, then charge you like 50$.

Anyways I feel your pain, hard drive failure sucks hairy sweaty "I've been dancing on ecstasy for 6 hours" raver balls.

Btw.. If I remember right, micro bytes referred me to this place I think wanted something like 800$. I'll check tomorrow if I still have the bill with the website written on it.
I'm feeling wtf charles? right now..
