Question For Certain Promoters....

Straight up.... What the fuck is up with booking SO MANY GODDAMN DJ'S djs for your events?

1-styles are so varied that no fan of any particular genres can be bothered to attend
2-its such a major pain in the ass organising so many people that the integrity of the party itself suffers
3-hour long dj sets leave very little time for any dj to share any artistic vision whatsoever
4-ultimately noone gets promoted properly or paid properly

I could go on and on.... I can't seem to find one valid reason other than a pitiful popularity contest topped with an utter lack of taste, vision and foresight.

Anyone care to take a shot?

1- true... but there are still a few retards like me that'll enjoy line-ups with 6 different styles... nice to get so much sound that at some point you've no clue what is playing... but yeah... hhc and minimal in the same room in a party is just wrong! there is a way to be creative without being fucking chaotic... structure and coherence is important especially when you're going nutz on the line-up

2- yeah well.. some promoters arn't up for that kind of a challenge even if they think they are

3- in one hour you could mix 2 ricardo villalobos tracks or 50 drum'n'bass tracks... some style cater to short sets some sure as hell dont

4- promotion-wise it can be cool to have alot of fans of different styles in the same room... and potentially promoters and djs of different styles so that they can be exposed to other djs from other scenes... and if it wasnt for these event alot of talented but less-known djs would never be booked... promoters in montreal wont book a line-up with 2 hour sets with noobs on their 3rd set... and people wont go to a party with a line-up full of djs they dont know...

cash-wise... yeh... the money sucks, no questions asked

just my two cents though... grain of salt
I'm feeling sinus right now..

lol breathe, i wanted to post something pretty similar.

there is a question i wanna ask too.

why does promoter book dj's that cant even mix, at all thier parties, while good djs dont even get booked.

i will not name names, but ive seen djs playing an hour or more, and not even being able to BEATMATCH 2 songs. and im not even talking about structure matching. and im pretty sure these dj's dont even pay for thier music, cause hey, of course, they play on cd. i play on cd too, but at least i pay my track.

as a producer im pissed off when i see dj's playing 128kbps out-of-soulseek tracks.

as for diferent styles, it can be ok, as long as its not too diferent (minimal house to happy hardcore to electro just doesnt do it.)

and i think the "new" promoters think that doing a rave is like doing a party at home. but they have to know that a dj pays for his gear, his track, his time... ect... he HAS to be paied in return.

is it at what the rave scene has gone too. i remeber promoters fucking thier asses up to do quality events so newcomers goes into these party had have the time of thier lives, now, i dont see any of these, i see promoters doing nothing and having a shitty party and newcomer in the scene never coming back because they are not impressed by the party's quality, and dont enjoy themselves as much as they would.

wonder why in 2002 there were 500-600 people at every events, and now we struggle to get a mere 200, with 1/4 of the party there used to be.

anyways...

and yeah, whats up with 3 rooms with genre mixed up between each?
I'm feeling hardcore right now..

It's my personal opinion but having one-two style in 8-10hours gets boring, i like psytrance but if i had to listen to more than 3hours of it i'd just want to kill myself... i LOVE hardstyle but i couldn't do an all night hardstyle event...
Mixing up styles, that makes some kind of a progression (not minimal house to happy then to electro as you guys said it above) is fun and adds something to the party, it warms ppl up with slower and smoother music and makes them dance hard as fuck around the end...

I think one hour sets are reasonable, unless the dj playing is a headliner, out of town dj that won't have the chance to be here for some time after the show, and that the promoter wants people to get to know the djs style better...

Personally I always paied my djs no matter if i lost or made $ with the event!

===

I check the calendar every day to edit some events and stuff.. and just because i have lots of free time :P
I noticed there are more and more parties thrown by "promoters" who have been raving for less than 3months and are aged between 15 and 17...
They don't really care about quality, more like inviting people to a kitchen and make them play on da computer speakrs while the so called promoters can go buy more drugs with the money made at the door..

SADDD

Quantity versus quality,

Booking fewer but better djs in somewhat of a logical order will assure you more success and a better reputation on the long term,

I'd much rather go listen to djs like Jordan or Sarcastic for a couple of hours than 8 wankers who "kindof" dj for half the price.

At least I know I'm gonna get my moneys worth while encouraging artists who actually know what they're doing!

I do think it's more of a friends thing these parties... People want to be around their friends so they support people who want to become djs possibly in the future who are their friends. And as everyone knows, even Jordan and Sarcastic were once wanna be djs and maybe one of those 20 djs who spun for 45 minutes each will become the next big thing...

I'M surprise nobody talked about this point

5-Equipment.Okay..like i know i only play vinyls, and i pay all my tracks cuz i love to encourage artist.BUT WTF.Now I always have to mention it to the promoters and it's been few times the *promoters* where like? oh really? you need turntables? wtf.And 9/10 the pitch is fucked ,or the crossfader isn't working on the mixer or ,another time, the 2 turntables were set in the same channels...I don't understand the point of throwing a party and don't put the money on the essentiel! It's like cooking a pie without an oven ya know.

mmmmm pie.

Parties with tons of styles, tons of DJs, are for people who don't give a fuck about music, they just want an excuse to take a handful of pills. But let's face it, without those parties, the little ravers wouldn't find out what they really like and it's parties like these that let them do that, eventually.
Many many ravers couldn't care less who's playing, as long as their parents aren't around and their blood is full of chemicals.
It's also parties like these that introduce n00bs to raves in the first place, no one knows what they like without having the rest of the garbage shoved down their ear canals.
Parties that cater to a style, to long sets, to fewer but more quality DJs, they are the mature parties, that you can go to sober and still enjoy yourself. You go there expecting and knowing who will be attending, what kind of vibe their will be and can be assured that the sound/deco/venue and eveything is done PROPERLY! (based on the crew)

It's my personal opinion but having one-two style in 8-10hours gets boring, i like psytrance but if i had to listen to more than 3hours of it i'd just want to kill myself... i LOVE hardstyle but i couldn't do an all night hardstyle event...

sounds to me like you just plain can't stand a style for more than a few hours, isn't that the number one sign of not actually liking those styles? Sure E can makes you cream when you're there and the bass is pumping fast paced solid beats, but if you truly like something/someone, my experience is that you'll be able to do it/them all night long till the sun hits the sky.

Now some parties can cater to a generalized crowd and still be specific and quality, like Girls Just Want To Have Funk : Psytrance ----->

After throwing one of montreal's most varied parties for 4 straight years, i can say that all this is BULLSHIT!! RaveDave said it the best i think and i will try and add to his point..

I for myself can't sit through more than 4 hours of psytrance anymore.. now, i play psytrance and i can listen to psytrance but there's only so much my mind can handle at a time. The same goes for progressive.. can you imagine an entire party filled with prog.?? i mean, at one point people will want the music to take a different direction.. or an 8 hour techno party?? where would those lovly melodies be at 6 am ??

i can't even beleive that this thread ended up talking about dj's playing for free and being "shit" ?? WTF ??

Nobody puts a gun to anyone's head saying "you better attend the next party" .. if the styles or Dj's don't suite your needs, please, don't show up.. if your looking to join a cult, i'm sure you can find a few around the city.....

Variety is the Spice of life people !!

yeah, okay, maybe there was this one party that didn't have a logical progression.. OHHH NOOOO .. call the WAAAAAAAAAMBULANCE !! someone, please !!!

And yeah, its about being with your friends.. really.. when you are at home, listen to what you want.. at a party, its not your Ipod playing where you can just shuffle tracks you don't feel like hearing.. go out to chill with your friends and try and discover some new sounds.. if you don't like what you are hearing, just talk more !!

sheesh..
I'm feeling single right now..

oy mate i think you should put some thought into whatever you type before you start posting bollocks like that

as posted above, yeh, i fuckin enjoy multiple style parties, i also enjoy multpile style sets for that matter! and you know what, i aint even done a fuckin hit of E in my whole life. Thats right mate, i havnt had drugs in about three years. And you know what else, same goes for the guy you are quoting who for those who dont know (and if you dont youve prolly been on the moon with your eyes shut and your hands over your ears signing lallallalala as loud as you can) he's the one organising, probably, the most successful mixed raves in montreal. Ironic a bit?

Yes some people enjoy more than one style of music in a room and enjoy it for the music... psytrance for 12 hours does get fucking boring, especially considering there are so many rules to mixing it that no matter who's playing, the mixes are all the fucking same and at the same place... i havnt heard anyone get creative behind the decks at a psy party in months... and if anyone ever does than every other dj in the room looks at em like he's a fuckin criminal innit... and you know what, it aint even just psy when you look at it... any style thats relatively old has its rules and special ways and shit... if you break out and, god forbid, try and be original it automatically sucks in the eyes of all the elite know-it-alls of that sound. One style parties are dope if the djs are original and put some personality into their mixing and the crowd open-mided enough to accept it... id say yesterday was a prime example

Now you think one styled parties have less drugs... and your promoting a psy event?... are you nutz mate? there aint no less fucked up people in these parties! jeez, you know a certain fellow known by the name of greg? point is, most everyone is fucked up all the fucking time no matter where the fuck you go. At some point, the only thing that really changes is what drugs people choose to take

But seriously though, I dont give a fuck how completely mashed people can be as long as they're havin' fun and they dont annoy the fuck out of me. If they've no clue who's playin and no clue what style he's playin, so what? yeh guess what, some people show up to have fun at parties, not be a geek about who's playin and what tracks he played in what order and how many tracks did he play in his set... We all have our reasons to show up at the rave but unless your a dj or a promoter, it aint your job to know that shit, your job is to get down on that dancefloor and shake that ass... eventually you might become picky about styles and get to know which parties are gonna cater to your musical tastes yeh but the point is, its still a party innit?

Promoters who are just throwing a party for the fuck of it and who dont ensure quality music for the crowd... now thats just disrespectful... dont book shitty djs yeh, if they're new then let em practice in their bedroom a bit till they're ripe to open up for the party or something

If you're a dnb dj in this city,

You're pretty much forced to play for free just to be able to actually play out once and awhile,

I don't think it has much to do with being good or bad, just reality

but i'm still surprise that some loft or small events (which i'm sure are fun.don't hate me here.) at ~25$/door get more attending than a "europe" or huge festival quality event like kinetik. duuuuuuuuuuude these prestations are legends!!
