Time for nerds and geeks around the world to go do some mourning..

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- Gary Gygax, who co-created the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69.

He had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm, said his wife, Gail Gygax.

Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys, and eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.

Gygax always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans, many of whom would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, his wife said. Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said.

"It really meant a lot to him to hear from people from over the years about how he helped them become a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, what he gave them," Gygax said. "He really enjoyed that."

Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures with the help of complicated rules. The quintessential geek pastime, it spawned a wealth of copycat games and later inspired a whole genre of computer games that's still growing in popularity.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Besides his wife, Gygax is survived by six children.

Recoil: It's a Beholder, they're quite vicious and have AMAZING treasure!

GIMME DA LEWT!

It is a sad day indeed, one consolation is that he has left his mark on the world and his work will keep on progressing even if he is gone from this plane of existance.

yes!! Beholder =)

when I was a kid I also had a whole box of those little lead figures too - a 5- headed dragon ( Tiamat? ), 2-headed ogre, Hill Giant... I can't even remember em now. for some stupid reason in Grade 5 I gave the whole box to my friend =(

If it was in the Dragonlance setting, that 5 headed dragon would have been Takhisis Queen of Darkness otherwise it definitely is Tiamat the Chromatic Dragon.

On DM totally screw Dragonlance for me. Goldmoon as a tag-along NPC = fail.

I mostly homebrewed when I DMed at the Lun@tik. Though I have very fond memories of Ravenloft.

Red Steel was a guilty passion. It was part of the Mystara campaign. Cowboys + Mutant powers = awesome.

yeah, Dragonlance was fun, we re-did Chronicles with our own characters taking the place of some of the company of the lance.. But Ravenloft is where I would really shine. I've always loved horror movies and was really good at DMing that. The PCs were totally not used to how I'd do things.. I wouldn't be, like, "Ok, there's a few goblins coming to attack you", I'd describe what they looked like and what they were wearing, so they'd never really know what they were fighting, only what it looked like and that it was coming to kill them.

As much as I loved D&D, my problem has always been that I wanted to play/DM a ROLE playing game, not a dice-rolling game.

My only beef with D&D has nothing to do with the creators of the game, but rather the sheer toughness of finding a competant DM.

That depends on the DM. Some games can be pretty much 90% roleplay. I switched to GURPS a while ago to offer even more roleplay / less rolling.

But hell, I haven't done anything in years. Sometimes I miss it.

What I'd done in the longrun was just adapt the white wolf system to everything. Things went so much smoother and involved a lot less math.

I'm sitting on a virtual mountain of gaming.. I've got the whole run of Cyberpunk 2020 (that I always wanted to play, but everyone else wanted to play Shadowrun 'cause it had elves and magic), the whole run of all the old World of Darkness, the whole run of Call of Cthulhu, and All Flesh Must Be Eaten.. I think CoC and AFMBE could translate incredibly well to the WoD system to cut down on the math and dice-rolling and put the focus on the story.

"I'll try and rig that drone!"
"Ok, let's see... Roll 32 6 sided dice"
"WHAT?"

hahahaha yeah.. I'd love to do a conversion of CP2020 to the World of Darkness system... I mean, it really just ends up making things so much easier than math and find-the-right-polyhedra

I think that there is not ONe good way to do do gaming, I had fun with very relax groups that were joking and saw gaming more as a relaxed session where being serious was not even conceivable and with other groups for which gaming was serious business, both vision were good in my opinion, the experience on the other hand was hugely different from one to the other. As for Gary Gygax I must say that I always liked the way he was describing his old gaming sessions in the Colonel's Corner in the piedpiper publishing forum [ piedpiperpublishing.yuku.com ] ( a forum that was (and still is) mostly used by people who relished in old style D&D gaming). Greyhawk was the campaign I played the longest as a player so I guess that is another way that Gygax influenced the gamer I am today (even if the campaign I GM the longer was a Shadowrun one)

That said it was almost one month ago since the last time Gary posted on that Forum and I will miss reading him and the tales of the old adventures of Bigby ,Mordenkeinen, Tenser, Rary and the others.

You may have been mad, Zagyg, but you will be for many geeks you will always wait for us in the deepest corners of Castle Greyhawk...the one adventure you just could not finish cause even if you talked of this adventure as the greatest one, some adventures like some stories should never be finished.

Farewell Colonel

I was always a big fan of Forgotten Realms settings, mainly for the storyline. I still have a prematurely retired level 11 Gnome Illusionist character sheet lying around somewhere. I only had a few good DMs to work with when I was younger, and everyone got into Rifts and TMNT after a while. Surprisingly, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a pretty awesome RPG. Ninja skills plus mutants equals one hell of a fun character creation process. Then it all went to shit with the Vampire: The Masquerade craze, after that playing RPG's stopped being fun, as I'd have to hang out with dorks who couldn't separate reality from fiction and wanted to be vampires one day. Capes, stupid attitudes, declining taste in music (more Dead Can Dance, less KMFDM), and discussions about Anne Rice. I started eating more garlic.

I really enjoyed a lot of the older D&D video game adaptations, particularly Pool of Radiance, but the thing I hate about Dragonlance is how there are always so many fucking Draconians. There's a point where it's just boring fighting those fuckers. I also used to have the old Monstrous Compendium or Fiend Folio. Does anyone remember Osmodeus? He's apparently the Satan of the D&D universe, though they probably have revised that since.

Anyways, thank you Gary Gygax for helping me geek out as a pre-teen. Thanks, I think, yeah. I shall roll my hundred sided die in thine honour.

I rolled a 3. Ah well.
I'm feeling the feeling right now..
