Need Help With Reason 4

v.2-1

Unbelievably enough, my last attempts at producing tracks were with Fruity Loops which I absolutely despised because it was impossible to alter a sound clip's PITCH without changing its length (tempo). Meaning, if you wanted to have a clip play at a higher octave, the clip would play FASTER, therefore being shorter. Unless I didn't know what the fuck I was doing with FL, I thought this was utter ridiculousness and I forgot the whole production deal.

All of the sudden, I feel the urge to produce yet again and got my hands on Reason 4 (who hasn't), installed it and marvelled at the enormity or the learning task at hand. I've NEVER used Reason before.

So therefore, oh masters of production here :

1. anybody here know of decent Reason beginner tutorial websites I could learn the ropes with ?

2. I'm thinking of trying to compose electro and some industrial stuff as well (hey, to each his own). Where or what should I look for to get more samples ? Should I look for ReFills or Reason Samples or something else ? And where should I look for that ? Torrent sites, specialized sampling websites ? Anywhere else ?

3. your Reason rack : I'm sure some of you here have created some pretty interesting electro/D&B/industrial stuff here. What's in your rack to get that " sound " ? I'm looking for POINTERS, not your personalized settings for EVERYTHING on your rack.

4. personal feedback : anything you think would be essential before I plunge head first into this ? I'm not looking to produce top quality stuff here, just looking to create a couple of tracks that I've been meaning to get out of head or even remix some shit up, who knows ?

Any info, from experience or not, you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance !
I'm feeling dramatic. f**k off right now..

Audio samples will have to be your best friend in this case. Electro is hard to make, and like dnb it's mostly sampled synths, noises, basslines, and breaks (Dr. Rex loops) if you're making it in reason.

Use the Scream distortion for those growly electro sounds.
Use preferably "Disco Sampled" drum loops, but chop them up to make your own breaks (looping is gay)
Filters, Filters, Filters...when making 4-4, you have to have variety, and filters will do that for your sounds.
Use the NN-19 for audio samples, that's probably the best tool on Reason, that and the Rex Player.

Thats all I can suggest for reason, I'm using Logic for everything now. So I dropped reason.

Have fun!

Did you drop it for any particular...erm...reason ?

And thanks for the info ! I'll most definitely look into Rex and NN-19. Good stuff.

yeh, cause if you have a working copy of Logic 7 and aren't using it & still using Reason, you're fucking stupid.

It has everything reason has and more, all the same capabilites, times a thousand. Unless you're rewiring reason into Logic, Ableton or Cubase Sx, I don't see why anyone would use it with working copies of those said programs. Like I said, it's all about what you use
for samples. People on here will try to bullshit their way around why they use samples and they'll tell you "Make your own sounds!"
but the honest to god truth is EVERYTHING you hear nowadays is swapped, shared and traded samples in the producing community.

I have Ableton 7 as well but from what I can tell (and read), it's not so good in treating clips (as in .WAVs).

Honestly, I'm more at ease by creating tracks with all sound clips so that's why all this gear in Reason scares the crap out of me. I don't know what half of them do and not only that, I'm not sure any of the drum machines will produce the kickdrums I'm looking for.

Meh, I guess I'll have to experiment and figure some shit out for myself.

But hey, you thnk Reason is the way to go for a classy starter program for production (as opposed to the gazillion clones out there that don't support pugins and have like 5 knobs you can tweak, tops) ?

You have to start somewhere, and reason is the perfect thing to help you.

You actually pretty much described Reason right there.. Reason doesn't support plugins, and yeah there's a lot of knobs you can tweak, but you're still limited to using only what they include for your synths unless you rewire to cubase or logic or any other program, in which case you really don't need to use reason..
I'm feeling fuckin' crazy right now..

logic is my program of preference as well.
i haven't touched reason in a few years...
but it's got its appealing aspects.
really easy to figure out basics.
and i enjoyed a few of the instruments.
chopping up rex loops is fun, the matrix is a very cool way of sequencing synth parts and basslines and i really liked the redrum for sequencing.
my advice if you can't find the kicks you want is to either find a one shot sample of the kick you want...
and just load it into one the channels of the redrum.
and if you find a drum loop with a must have kit, make a rex loop with recycle and chop it up in the edit window of the dr.rex.
I'm feeling republican right now..

you can time stretch samples in fruity, either in the playlist, on the bottom half of that window, u drag a wav in there, and stretch it, automatically the pitch will change with it, but then you go to that samples "channel settings" right click the "pitch" knob in the "time stretching" area, and clik reset, to give the sample its original pitch...

or you could just change the pitch higher or lower for any of your samples, and the length of the sample wont change...
which version of fruity were you using? the older versions dont have this feature, but were talkin' years ago...

and Reason is awesome for generating sounds...download packs and fuck around with compressors, filters, and the Scream distortion!

i usually make a loop in reason, then use the sample in fruity...Reason works better with my midi controller too, for the modulator and pitch controls...
I'm feeling your nuts right now..

I think the last version I actually used was FL3. And yeah the Pitch knob was what screwed everything up. The time strecthing feature was horrendous, it deformed my wav file. Instead of having a sample that said " BIG UP ! ", after the time strech it was more like " B-B-B-BI-BI-BI-I-I-I-I-IG-IG-G-G-G-G U-U-U-U-U-UP-UP-UP-P-P-P-P-P". Some time stretching. Wow.

yeah, you gotta be careful, you can only start to stretch a sample so much before you start to hear artifacts.
I'm feeling wtf charles? right now..

lol, haha.

time stretching.

of course if you make a sample longer, its downpitched, and you have to use time stretching, may it be fl reason logic or cubase, its the basic of sampling...

Going from FL to Reason? Its not a step backwards...but it ain't a step forward either. More of a sidestep heh. Now might be the time to invest time and effort into Cubase or Logic or Live..

well, using fl for 6 years now and saw and tried cubase, i can say that they both equal each other, the only thing is that cubase is the industry standard.

I just wish they could add Ableton-like controll for the knobs in FL.. like, a like with points on it, instead of the retarded drawing system they've got.
