the krks are probably fine but you should check other sound cards because m-audio doesn't have a monopoly on the low budget sector anymore

i've been using the delta 66 for years now...

never really had a problem with it, cuz serial cards are usually pretty solid.

its pretty basic and gets the job done in most cases.

mind you... if your using this card for recording a preamp is a good investment, and i ended up having to buy a little midi box thingie too.

probably gunna end up buying something new pretty soon though.

anybody got any good recomendations?

was thinkin' about scoring a motu 828 or something in that range off e-bay, bit i know there is a buncha new shit out and i havent been keeping up to date with latest hardware.

i plan on picking up that new imac so its gotta be compatible.
I'm feeling warm unicorn jizz right now..

I think for the sole purpose of connecting Monitors to a computer, the m-audios are fine. All he needs 'em for is to have a better idea of what his music will sound like on bigger systems, you don't need anything superb for that. Besides, money is the real constraint here... so unless there's another 200$-/+ firewire sound card, I suggest the Firewire410...

Regardless of what you get, make sure it has balenced outs (and balenced ins if you are recording anything into it). And use balenced cables to connect it to your speakers or console.

oh and I might be a little hard on the rp's...
they arent that bad for the price...

but when you compare them side by side with some pretty good monitors, you can see that there is some issues in the high freqs.

placement and treatment will affect your sound more than your monitors. IE : look at host one 's pictures with his shitty truths. Now it wouldn't be so bad if those crappy monitors were set up right but look at how he has his speakers close to his wall. This will cause some really bad phase cancellation because early reflections will be quite strong.

If you are going to spend 400 $ on monitors , you should be spending 200 on room treatment.

you should spend some time to really learn how to set things up. I recently did a new makeover of the room and the sound different is incredible. I treated everything and added extentions to everything so the computer is no longer in the same room. The difference is huge.

and i was under the impression mboxes have to use protools. i wouln't waste your time with protools unless you plan to do live band mixing and recording and want to get used to the industry standard.

mbox: too expensive for what it is, and you are stuck with using protools...

protools is way overrated...

will you be recording anything ?

this will determine wether your A/D converters are that important. If they are important , that will help determine what you need.
