I've seen a few ads on television lately featuring "normal people" with robots. Comes to mind: FutureShop and Dell.

Do you believe that the technological industries are challenging the population to robot developpement since the industries, universities and laboratories are all miserably failing at it? You have HONDA with their astronaut, JPL probably built a mecano spider in some surgical bay and MIT's robots all look like moon landers and/or are solar-powered.

A lot of great inventions came from people working in their basements and garages in middle-of-nowhere. See RadioShack and Tyco both came from electronics geeks working in their mom's basements.

I think that through the vehicle of mass media, the industries wish to see what people have come up with. You also have to remember that a lot of people make great things, but just keep them for themselves or show them at local fairs thinking that Mitsubishi has already done something 100 times better, and NASA has an army of nuclear-space-men (in hazmat suits) building a prototype in Chienne Hill.

Yeah, so... hmm?
