This thread is for n00bs like me who just want to try mixing mp3s. Someone has an advise on how to do this? Like what software to get... I heard about Tracktor, VirtualDJ... Imma try these and give a feedback.
Is it better also to have some hardware with some knobs to play with. Finally, is it possible to mix cds using two normal computer cd-roms?
Thank you!

you wont be able to mix two cd on two seperate cd roms, your best bet is to try traktor, get the feel of it and record something. If not just try mixing in ableton.

This is where Screwhead comes into play!

Things is, you're not going to get away with being able to mix without spending some serious cash.
I wouldn't recommend Traktor, i've heard nothing but bad things. If you are serious about this, buy some CDJs or Turntables, if you just want to play around, i have no real advice.

Basically, all I want is something with which we can:
- play 2 mp3s at the same time
- adjust the pitch and the volume of each one independantly
- record

yeah HostOne is right about the mixer thing! i bought one of those fucking hercules mp3 dj bullshit and i dont even use the mixer on that shit because its only controlling the one in software and its nothing like a real mixer! thank god i was able to use the de jogwheel without the mixer on it and i can output on different channel at the back of the device ! so basically im using the device to start and place tracks but the EXTERNAL mixer is better for doin tight cuts and i can use a real turntable that i have for scratch or playing records with mp3 ! anyways all that to say that a REAL MIXER is so much better than the one in any software youll ever find ! especially if you wanna do those tights cut for scratching or just complicated mixing scheme like beat juggling and such !

fuck the fake faders !
I'm feeling pwn3d star right now..

I mean, software can't do what two hands can...
Hardware is real-time, software is cheat time, and cheaters get burned.

And honestly, I find hardware to be a thousand times more 'fun' than software.

..and what do you think your CDJs are? It's just a controll surface for some built-in software. With a good midi controller, you can do just as much with Traktor as you can with a CDJ 1000, even going as far as hooking it up to an external mixer and not relying on the built in one.

The equipment you use has nothing to do with how well you mix (unless you're using the auto beatmatch in traktor, which doesn't count as actually mixing)

hell, I can mix with turntables, PSPs, CDJs, Traktor, Serato/Final Scratch, Ableton (I'm good enough to beatmatch tunes I throw in in a few seconds now, which is a lot tougher for DnB than it is with standard 4/4 kick oriented music).. As long as you aren't cheating with the synch button (which is useless in DnB), it's not your gear that matters, it's how your tracks line up and your selection that are the most important. No amount of auto-beatmatching will make up for a shitty track selection and mixing out-of-phrase.

Indeed, as far as most dancers are concerned, as long as the beat is pumping the tracks are hot and well mixed, they wont care what software or controler or mixer you are using.
History tends to side with those that innovate.
And no amount of vintage gear or vintage attitude can make up for a lack of talent/taste.

My piece of advice when using traktor...

take a peice of black electrical tape and place it over the sync button and tempo meter... there always wrong.

I really like to be able to watch the volume graph. It is so easy to match the beats because you can see far in advance.
For me it's like trying to weigh a bolt. You get more precision if you divide the weight of 10 bolts by 10 than by weighting 1. But it sucks to have only a mouse. Imagine a one-fingered dj.
I'm sure that you can buy a little console with knobs that you can plug on your computer for not too expensive.

ys, an usb mixer, but it is expensive, but less tha acomplete kit tough,

i 'understood' the basic of mixing with virtual dj, but dont ever try to go out of your room with it, its pretty looser, but it gives yu hint of how it works if you never tried anything
I'm feeling promiscuous right now..
