I get that fairly often, it's refered to as sleep paralysis. It's fuckin' odd at times, I always get it with this sense that there's something trying to kill me/steal my soul. I've seen this monster/thing staring right at me many times.. Fuckin' weird shit. It happens most often when you fall asleep lying on your back.

Thats it exactly!.. thanks for the link.. I havnt had it in a while, but yeah it was always accomapnied by a strong sence of panic like I had to move NOW to get away from something but couldnt.. I'd concentrate super hard and eventually id be able to move an arm or a leg as if it were stuck in molases then bit by bit id get all motricity back... VERY fucken' weird shit, somewhat relieved to learn that its relatively common though.
I'm feeling myspace right now..

kinda off the subject, but I just woke up and this makes me think of something. Has anyone ever had really recurring nightmares? Like not as a kid, and not the same nightmare. But lately every time I go to sleep I have nightmares, even if it's just a nap, to the point that I'm afraid of going to bed cause I know I'll wake up panicked. The same thing happened last november for like 3 weeks.

lol this sounds like a doctors help page in a magazine :P

I haven't really gotten anything like that, but what I've gotten before are dreams/nightmares that are like "continuations" of each other, easily years apart. It's really weird, like, waking up and thinking "Wow, I remember parts of that dream/world from when I was 4 years old!"

The bit that I get the most is a recuring nightmare like that, that ALWAYS ends up in waking up with a sleep paralysis.

Some background on the whole thing:

When I was about 6-7 years old, my grandparents were living out in St-Elie-D'Orford (around Sherbrook) and had a huuuuuuuhe forest behind their place that I'd play in all the time with the neighbor's kids. I got lost for a few hours, couldn't find my way back. This was a really, really, really huge forrest. Easily a few thousand acres. After a few hours going around in circles, I saw this girl in a green dress a ways off from me, and she didn't answer or seem to notice me when I called to her, so I started walking towards her, and she kept walking away from me, always just a turn away so that I could just catch a glimpse of where she was going. Eventually I ended up in this clearing in the woods that had a huge pile of dead branches in the middle, and she was standing on top of it. Waved at me, and then kinda just sank down into the branches. Right then is when I heard my mother calling for me, her and my grandparents had been looking for me for a few hours.

For YEARS after that, I'd frequently have nightmares where she'd show up in it. They're always dreams that are completely "real", not anything weird, and I actually think I'm awake the whole time. I usually wake up, get dressed and go outside to do something, and there's no one around, like I'm the only person left on earth. At some point night falls and I end up feeling like I'm being followed by something, or I'll see her ahead of me like I had when I was a kid, always just catch a glimpse of her turning onto a street, closing a door at the end of the hallway, stuff like that.

So at some point, either from chasing her or running away from this evil presence that I feel, I end up in a room and decide to rest, usually by sitting on a reclining sofa. I sit down, and then I get paralyzed and can't move, and she's RIGHT THERE in my face with her nose practically touching mine, and her skin is dark gray and rotten, her eyes are completely white, and it feels like she's sucking out my soul. That's usually when I wake up and get the sleep paralysis, when I wake up, can't move like in my dream, feel like I've got my soul being sucked out of my body, and I can still clear as day see her rotting face infront of me.

The other weird part about it, is that usually when I get this dream/sleep paralysis (specifically involving the girl in the green dress) is the same time that shortly afterwards something goes bad in my life. Breakups, hospitalisations, getting extremely sick (I had the same thing happen to me a couple of weeks before my IBS started), my ex's dad dying, waking up with an ear infection when I was 7-8 years old.. Any time I dream of her, something in my life goes to shit in some way. I've come to nick-name her my guardian demon.

The other one that I get once in a while is similar, but I'm not following anyone, just running from this "evil presence", and when I get to a room, there's an old woman sitting on a reclining chair, and all of a sudden I end up on the floor with her looking over me, again feeling like I get my soul sucked out of me, and when I wake up I still see her.. When I get those, nothing "bad" ends up happening to me.

It's some seriously weird shit.
I'm feeling bleh right now..

That happens to me sometimes. Every night I go to bed I'll have a different nightmare for an undetermined amount of time. I dunno what kind of advice to give about it though.

The weirdest was when I was playing resident evil 4(the game is not even scary or anything in real life) and every fucking night I had a different zombie nightmare. That was just from playing it too much though, not my usual nightmare. Otherwise it's been because of something bothering me I guess but that is never obvious at the time. I don't know how to make it stop exactly. I suspect by figuring out what it is and dealing with it but I still don't understand what all my nightmare episodes are about and I'm not having any now. Whenever they happen they have a clear pattern to them though.

Alrighty! yeah I fell asleep on BOTH my arms once and couldn't move em when i woke up, I swung my arms at my alarm clock and managed to knock it onto the floor though!! small victory.

About that whole sleep paralysis thing, i am pretty sure it's something else all together. I had this job at a building near Lionel Groulx once and often I was the only one on the whole floor. So I went exploring once and found this room with a mattress in it. I was supposed to be working but no one was there SO I decide to take a nap. I was obviously a bit sketched out by sleeping at work, I didn't want to fall asleep too long and have my boss wake me up... oh the embarrassment that could have been!

So i'm sleeping on this mattress and I wake up, I couldn't move my body though, I was trying as much as anyone ever would but nothing... I wanted to just roll myself off the mattress to try and jolt myself into movement, and so I slowly tried to roll off the side; with much anticipation I finally managed to fall to the floor (half a foot fall) and at that point i could move as much as I wanted.
It took me a while to realize but I now think that I wasn't ever really awake until I fell off the mattress. But why did I think I was awake? Well!
When you are asleep, believe it or not, you can open your eyes slightly and you can see, that coupled with an imaginative human brain creates all the visual queues to make you think your are awake and looking at stuff. Of course you can't be sure because you can't move your head enough to confirm anything. SO you're really just dreaming; remembering extremely well where you were, it's not hard to precisely 'see' around you, even seeing yourself sleeping from a 3rd person perspective sometimes. Again though, this was all an illusion. I mean, if you can believe you are awake in dreams, this doesn't seem far fetched at all.
NOW, you think you're awake, why can't you move? Well your eyes are open, and you clearly see that you are not moving, but the 'you' you are trying to move isn't your physical body, but the 'willful' you you have in your mind's eye. Your muscles don't respond to signals they don't receive and so I came to the conclusion that I simply wasn't actually trying to move at all, that I simply 'wanted' to move and my 'dream-world' reflexes were obviously not helping.
So you're laying there, 'seeing' in front of you, but no worries, you are not conscious yet, and the subconscious has a hard time moving your limbs, get someone to pinch you and I garantee you'll move in a millisecond.
anyway, long story short, you were prolly half awake dreaming trying to move in your mind
I'm feeling pression right now..

no, it's a fairly documented thing.. When you sleep, your brain shuts off movement, or else you'd act out what you do in your dreams. That's what a lot of sleepwalking is, the brain not properly shutting that part off.

Sleep paralysis is waking up, but your brain hasn't quite caught up to the fact that you're awake and hasn't "shut down" the block on your motor functions. The halucinations are also part of that, the part of the brain that dreams is also not completely off yet. What's the weirdest about it is that, apart from some kind of demon, the "vision" that everyone sees are female, which is where the succubus myths came from, and the original name that I found out about sleep paralysis under was by looking up what someone had once called "old hag syndrome".

visions eh?

in any case, people love naming things like 'sleep paralysis', 'whip lash', 'cancer'.... pssshhhh

in our case, we're all just describing still being asleep... I mean, there's no brain equivalent of 'isAsleep' to go on, but certain characteristics are met that cause us to declare someone 'asleep' or 'awake', it's not that black and white.
That doesn't change the fact that it's freaky to feel awake, and not be able to move.

pretty much...its mainly the neurotransmitter acytylcholine (along with 5-HT and NE) that regulates sleeping movements (actually it's the main player in all body movements), so when you wake up and you cant move it's because these 3 neurotransmitters are still being secreted (or at least your still under the effect of their secretion) at the specific frequency needed for sleeping...

sleep tight

oh and evilkitkatbar try putting a piece of cristalline in your room...i think that's how it's spelt...it's a type of mineral/stone...needs to be purified before putting it in your room...
