| Hmmm... I've been running a definetly-not-legit version Live 6 for around two months on a regular basis without any problems. My computer has been hooked up to the internet all along, so I figure it had plenty of time to do any kind of verification and stuff. Of course at this point I won't be dumb enough to try any updates or stuff like that, but is there anything I should be careful about? |

| If you've got any decent firewall, just block ableton from accesing the internet. Never had a problem with it shutting down on me, zone alarm popped up to warn me it was trying to access the internet. |

| Yeah, that's what I'm using. Don't remember which mode I had it on, but don't put it on the easiest/most leniant one. It'll be a bitch for the first couple of days, everything you run is gonna pop up a few times, but once you've got your established programs, you'll notice when it asks for anything specific. You can also just pull a pre-emptive strike and go ahead and just block all the software they shouldn't be connecting to the internet in advance. |

| I think I'm going to install it, even though I have a very weird conspiratory type theory when it comes to computers. It seems that the least protected I am, the better my computer runs.
Right now I'm running XP SP1, no virus blocker, no firewall and my comp is running great... has been for 2 years. Mind you I'm pretty careful as to what I open/use. I also stopped downloading games being that I don't seem to have the time for that. |

To have a computer connected to the internet with no antivirus and no firewall is the equivalent of going to an orgy of complete strangers with no condom on and shooting up with other people's needles in between the fucking. Luck will only last for so long. |

| well, I do have my computer set up in a weird way that is kinda non-virus friendly.
I have two hard-drives. My master which is a small 60 gig runs windows and all my other system components (browser, word, etc.) Then I have my second hard-drive a 250 gig, which is basically used as mass storage, I put all my music production stuff, music, movies and other random shit I need backed-up in it. I DO NOT install windows on this drive. The way I see it, if I do get infected badly with a virus, chances are it's not gonna be hiding anywhere in my 250 gig. And if it is... I'll be able to spot it pretty easily. If I do get infected it's usually hiding on my 60 gig in the windows or temp directory somewhere. So... when I do get infected I'm just going to format the 60 gig and reinstall windows, and being that most of my important stuff is on a seperate hard-drive I should be o.k.
Also I turned system restore off. I also read an article on some hacking website that installing the latest security patches and shit might not always be a good idea, because any new virus made is going to work to try and get around the new service pack, not the older one.
I'm also kind of afraid to install any virus scanner cuz I have a feeling it's gonna find all kinds of crap, ignorance is bliss sometimes. |

| The service packs are one of the most important things to install, they patch flaws that let anyone/anything into your computer and execute itself.. That's what most of the patches are for, really.
And don't be so sure about that 2 drive scheme, they're not common, but there are some viruses that destroy data, doesn't matter what drive it's on.
System restore only needs to be turned off if you've got a virus that you're getting rid of, because it might have been backed-up into the system restore file and that'll make it inaccesible to an anti-virus. |

| Yeah I know what the patches are for, but in my eyes there pretty damn useless. It's like trying to patch up the titanic after it hit the ice-berg with bandages. As soon as it's put out people are out there trying to create viruses to get around the new fixes. No real competent hacker wants to make viruses that can get into older systems. Nobody runs that; companies and all the big juicy targets upgrade all the time. Hackers usually make these things for the simple thrill of destroying stuff that's supposedly secure and indestructable. Any dumbass that knows how to ping an I.P can get into my computer, but there's no thrill/challenge... it's easy as hell. And besides I really don't trust Microsoft and friends... sometimes I'm under the impression that they're the ones making all these viruses to fuck with computers so that people feel they need to constantly up-grade and re-patch. Think of it, Installing SP1 / SP2 is a bitch if you have an illegal version of windows. If I was microsoft it would be real fucing tempting to make a virus that exploits some sort of flaw that this new "patch" can fix. But then make it so that this patch is only installable on legit versions of windows. Microsoft isn't stupid, they know nobody buys windows.
And yeah I thaught about that, my next purchase is an external HD that I'm going to back-up on.
And your right about the system restore thing, but I've been able to manually delete viruses by simply deleting the files because the "regenerater" script is in system restore. That's how it usually works anyways. |
