Parents warned over secret language of net paedophiles
FERGUS SHEPPARD MEDIA CORRESPONDENT (fsheppard@scotsman.com)

IT IS the secret language of the internet that paedophiles exploit to groom children under the noses of their parents.

A list of coded phrases used by teenagers in online chat forums and manipulated by child abusers looking for victims was published yesterday as part of Safer Internet Day, a Europe-wide initiative to protect children on the web.

The phrases - such as NIFOC (naked in front of computer) or PAW (parents are watching) - are similar to the kind of abbreviations that have grown up around mobile-phone text messaging.

The list is designed to sound a warning bell if parents see the phrases flashing across their children's computer screens. It was collated by the anti-grooming software company In Loco Parentis, based on common acronyms used in chatrooms and instant messaging services.

Paul Duckett, the company's spokesman, said: "The words are dangerous because if you don't understand what your child is saying or who they are talking to, you don't know what they are going to do. You could see the initials LMIRL [let's meet in real life] and not understand your child might be planning to meet someone."

Apparently innocuous phrases such as: "Are your parents around?" or: "Have you got any brothers and sisters?" are often used by paedophiles, he claimed.

Yesterday's call for action comes in the wake of an explosion in "networking" on the web, driven by instant messaging tools such as MSN Messenger or AOL's Instant Messenger, coupled with the unprecedented capacity to meet new people offered by websites such as MySpace and Bebo.

According to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, a police-backed watchdog launched in the UK last year, 31 per cent of young people have received unwanted sexual remarks online or via a text message. However, only 7 per cent of their parents were aware of it.

The scale of the potential problem is illustrated by the fact that three out of four young people aged between nine and 19 have internet access at home.

According to Ofcom, the UK's telecoms regulator, 70 per cent of people aged between 16 and 24 have used social networking websites to make friends or share personal information.

John Carr, a new technology adviser to the children's charity NCH, said it was difficult for parents to police their children's use of the internet. "The kids have their own street talk, their own online talk and their own way of texting. It's just part of the hard business of being a parent.

"You need to try to keep up with it and the only way, frankly, is to sit down and talk to your kids, get them to tell you where they go, who they meet, what sites they are visiting. It's not realistic to expect a parent to sit next to a child on the internet, particularly as they get older, and kids have a right to privacy, too."

Technology firms have sought to create software safeguards to prevent children accessing explicit websites. Commercial packages such as Net Nanny, Surf Patrol and Cybersitter are popular, and Microsoft promotes controls allowing parents to limit surfing for children as a key feature of its newly-launched Vista operating system.

However, one psychologist suggested parents could explore their children's often superior knowledge of technology without the appearance of prying.

Sonia Livingstone, professor of social psychology at the London School of Economics, said: "Children have something valuable to tell them and are usually quite excited about what they are doing online.

"Parents could say, 'I'd love to see you on MySpace' or 'Show me how you do that' or 'How many friends have you got?' It's a way of having a conversation rather than checking up."
