-BIO-

DJ Rolando grew up in the Southwest Detroit Latino community where he was heavily influenced by the music and style of mixing that was being spun on local radio stations by the likes of Jeff (the Wizard) Mills, Alan Oldham and the legendary Electifying Mojo. Taking his cue from these musical luminaries, Rolando soon took to DJing himself, where he gained the attention of Underground Resistance's Mike Banks. As a member of UR's assault DJ collective Rolando soon started making a name for himself on the international DJ circuit, dropping storming sets in Europe and the UK. Never staying away from Detroit for too long, however, he soon, under the guidance and support of Banks, entered the legendary Black Planet studios to start recording as the Aztec Mystic.

Fusing his love for techno with a range of other early musical influences from Marvin Gaye to War and the Latin beats of Carlos Santana, Rolando created a sound that was very much rooted in his Latin heritage and fascination with Aztec mythology.

Recently, Rolando has been at the centre of a controversial and highly publicised battle with corporate giants Sony over his recent, and UR's most succesful, release 'Jaguar'. Sony approached Banks in an attempt to licence the track and, after being typically declined, proceeded to hire another producer to make a beat for beat cover version. The ensuing war that was fought between the fiercly indipendant and localised UR label, publically waged by thier media frontliner Cornelius Harris, and the worldwide multi-million corporation of Sony was unparalelled to say the least.
In the end it became a classic David and Goliath situation, with UR rallying the support of its strong and loyal underground following via the internet to take arms against Sony, who subsequently recieved a world-wide barrage of E-mails and phone calls protesting at thier behaviour. In the end, perhaps due to Sony's links with many underground artists on its Japanese based Techno division, the giants threw in the towel. The victory was a highly significant one as it demonstrated the strength, commitment and integraty of techno's world-wide underground fan base, a populace that, usually quiet and unseen, were able to rise as one voice and smash the programmers that UR has long raged thier 'sonic war' against.

By the time it was all over, however, Rolando's track had recived so much publicity, being heavily played on England's largest commercial radio one station, that it recieved a full UK CD release on UR and 430 West, throwing Rolando very much into the media spotlight. Since everything has died down, Rolando has returned to Detroit to regroup and take a momentary back seat away from the public's attention, where, no doubt, he is planning his next assault.
