So...
im producing for more than 3 years now.. but its only lately that i started using compressors on the master channel...

do you ppl have tips and tricks about good compressions and mastering, i know compression differs on every track, but how do you now if the compression is good and stuff... im still uncertain!

i tend to lower the treshold really low and have a small ratio like 1.5:1

since i want the compressor not to overcompress and i want everypart of the song to be compressed, i think, logically, that it sould be this wayin my case... what do u guys do with comps?
I'm feeling in lawve right now..

You don't really usually want to compress the master, you want to do it to individual parts to make sure their elements don't overpower each other. Like, on your drum chanel so that no part goes too much louder than the rest.

Try a multiband compressor and put a limiter at the end. threshold and ratio are important but attack and release are not to be forgotten If your attack is to quick, it'll squash your music if your release isnt well set you will hear pumping. Dont forget to put an eq before your compressor. often times, you can gain volume by thinning off the bass. Another trick is to compress the crap out of a track and mix it with a non compresed version of the track.
Use your ears!!!
I'm feeling fuck yeah! right now..

well i use a good compressor and then a limiter at -.1db
i use to compress every channel before or only the channel that needs it,
but my tracks sound really nicer since i compress the master too!

Erm I recently learnt a lot about this... it really helps your sounds, I have alot of things I normally do to my sounds.

First thing is to eq every god-damned track in my song. Make sure I get the right frequencies for the right sounds. For example I usually kill the low end in my pads, or I'll give the leads I want to have punch a slight boost to about 250-300 hz.

Something a lot of people over-look is panning. Not all your sounds can be dead-center. You have to try to create a sort of stereo image.

Compression helps too though. I usually find compression is more important with bass like sounds. And not so much pads and sound effects. I use it on vocals alot too.

For my bass sounds I take the kick-drum and bring it to its own channel. I then compress it alone... I'm not exactly too sure what my settings are, I have them saved... I think I'm using a 5-6 ratio though. I then use a compresser on my bass line and maybe a few other sounds.

Then I use sidechaining with that and the bassline itself. That really helps you get those punchy bass-lines. I'd have to check what my settings are there, if your interested I'll check for you.

Then I use a compressor on the master with relatively soft settings and I have a few other plug-ins I run on the master which helps my sound out.

I know I'm not being very specific, if your curiouse ask and I'll tell you.
I'm feeling funny right now..

you don't need to use compression on every track, only the ones that have dynamics you need to attenuate. You usually get a higher quality sound if you use LESS EQ. Each digital effect decreases the quality of your sound chain. EQ should also be used to subtract frequencies if possible, to decrease frequencies instead of boosting them (although there are exceptions). Boosting frequencies can add distortion or phase problems.

Compressing the whole mix is good in some genres though, especially techno or really loud rock music.

Another trick is to record your audio at a good volume. I usually have a limiter and compresser running on the input to facilitate this.

Erm The plugins I use I'm pretty sure come with wave-lab. You should check em out there pretty tight.

i find to eq the master not relly usefull, because you dont usually want every sounds to sound higher or lower
i tend to eq sounds individually,

it depends on the tune, but sometimes dipping the mid-bass frequencies down a bit (around 500-700 hertz), and pushing up the highs a bit (10k +) can give you a good sound.

I never EQ the Whole mix.
Just on separate sounds.
I usually just use a limiter on the final mix.

i do like nitrous, example: i will eq my open hat, crash ... on the highs
but if i eq master on the highs, all sounds will be changed, that means less places cor my hats (or any other sound)

but yes sometime eqing the bass on the master channel can give your track a more bassy sound...
but i still prefer to eq the kick and bassline w/o touching the master
