Thanks UNICEF!

Nearly one in 10 Iraqi children suffers from acute malnutrition, according to a UN-backed government survey, which described the situation as "alarming."

CBC News
"Children are major victims of food insecurity," the report said.

The number of malnourished children in Iraq more than doubled from four per cent in 2002, the last year Saddam Hussein was in power.

The survey of 20,000 Iraqi households found that four million Iraqis, or roughly 15 per cent of the population, were in need of humanitarian aid, including food.

This was up from 11 per cent in a 2003 report. The survey was conducted by Iraq's ministries of planning and health supported by the U.N. World Food Program and the U.N. children's fund UNICEF.

"Decades of conflict and economic sanctions have had serious effects on Iraqis," the report said. "Their consequences have been rising unemployment, illiteracy and, for some families, the loss of wage earners."

Widespread violence following the U.S.-led invasion has also hindered humanitarian aid efforts.
