Healthy cigarettes?
Craig Silverman

The smoking ban will soon descend upon Montreal bars, clubs, restaurants and other places, but one non-smoking Quebecer is betting on continued demand for cigarettes - vitamin-enriched cigarettes, that is.

Explainer butts out the ban and sparks up a VitaCig.

1. Cigarettes are legal (hello tax dollars) and yet they can kill you (hello lung cancer). The provincial government has decided that it's time to rid Quebecers of second-hand smoke by banning smoking in a variety of establishments, including: bingo halls, bars, restaurants, shopping malls, bowling alleys, pool halls, convention centres, recreation centres, big tops, in common areas of buildings with six or more units, taxis... and the list goes on. Smoking on terrasses will be permitted, with some restrictions. Also: no more cigarette vending machines. The ban takes effect May 31, though a group of local bar owners are going to court to get it overturned. The smoking rate and tobacco sales in Quebec have been on the decline for years. Sales topped $13-billion in 1994, and had dropped to $8-billion by 2003. Sales declined by 15.5 per cent between 2001 and 2003 alone, according to the Non-Smokers' Rights Association. "Quebec is very interesting because there is that perception out there that everybody in Quebec smokes," said association rep David Sweanor when the 2003 numbers came out. "The fact is their smoking rates have fallen very, very dramatically." The government will be deploying an estimated 44 inspectors to keep venues smoke free.
Quebec is home to roughly 23,500 bars and restaurants.

2. Ah, but the butts keep coming. A local entrepreneur (and non-smoker) is marketing a new type of cigarette called the VitaCig. Yes, the pitch is that you can have your smoke and get some important vitamins at the same time. Roger Ouellette, inventor of the ciggie, created it for his smoker wife. He says the VitaCig has less odour than a regular cigarette, and also contains important ingredients such as vitamin C. Ouellette, who didn't return Hour's calls, told CTV, "We give you all the vitamins you lose, plus some vitamins to help you." Health Canada is not impressed, and stresses that there is no such thing as a healthy cigarette. The VitaCig is now available in over 2,000 stores in Quebec and will eventually make its way to other parts of the country.
