Vancouver – A computerized traffic system developed by IBM and successfully tested in Stockholm may offer a solution for urban planners in North American cities trying to cut congestion in the downtown cores. The system automatically charges drivers according to the time of day they are using busy roads and whether they are driving gas guzzlers or hybrids. Using a network of cameras and algorithms, the program helps match cars with the drivers and in Stockholm’s case cut the rush hour traffic by 25 percent and pushing 40,000 new riders on mass transit. Suggested price range is $1.45 to max $8.70. The system would operate from 6:30 am till 6:30 pm. As quoted from The Gazette page A16 March 8, 2006. Other then some peeps compiling about the increased camera use this is a great idea. Maybe with the cash from this they could fix the roads here in Montreal. If peeps have not noticed it is almost impossible not to show up on big bothers screen. If you look @ most cars on the road anywhere you will only see one person in the car. Yes we have car pools, but the best way to get someone to improve something is charge a bit for the right to something....or that could just be my option;) Lee |

 Coolness: 75410 | I dunno mang... montreal has the added benefit of being only accesible by bridge.. I always thought that the bridge tolls are a great idea, charge the commuters! Like in New York, its`really cheap to drive OUT of the city.. but really expensive to get in. Makes sense, and less invasive. (Though it doesn`t effect all the actual people from the island, which I guess is a minus) |
