I am writing a paper about modern Canadian adaptations of Shakespearian plays. On July 1st 2000, Serenity Industry held a party called "A Midsummer Night's Dream". It was a huge Canada Day rave held in Toronto. Flyers and decorataions were all in the "midsummer night's dream" style and there were theatre performances at the rave as well. This was not just a Shakespearian-themed rave, but a whole new way to perform and present Shakespeare.

First, does anyone have any information about this rave? If you attended, or know anyone who attended, please let me know.

Secondly, what do you think about "rave-theatre"? Are raves a form of theatre on their own, without designated theatre performers?

I actually like the idea a lot. It's different. I always like to see original ideas at parties.

A friend of mine did a play adaptation of Irvine Welsh's Ecstacy book which had lots of raving in it. He also performed it in clubs as opposed to theaters and utilized the lights and sound. It was dope, let me know if you want his email to talk to him for your paper.

I saw the Midsummer Nights Rave film and it sucked balls. One of the worst adaptations I'd ever seen of anything.

I'm filming another party-based series this summer. We'll be needing lots of extras, which will likely take the form of a shooting party (film, not guns) at the end of the summer. It's going to be hot and I'll post the details as they come up!

Welsh's Ecstacy is a great story, but the stories are so short! The only rave-based story (The Undefeated) is a pretty predictable story and a really plain romance. I don't know if there'd be enough substance on its own so I'm really curious to hear how your friend worked it. The corporate drug romance (Fortune's Always Hiding) would probably work really well if it were amped up and fleshed out a bit more. That story is fucking brilliant. Soccer-thug gangster falls in love with a grown-up flipper-baby and plots vengeance on the coporate pigs who approved the drug that disfigured her. The sex scenes would be really fucked up. A love story for the new century, but it does nothing for raves.

I'd love to talk to your friend too Insomniak! Its a hella good initiative.

Septima: Are you talking about a more immersionist approach to theatre? Cuz a rave would be really bad as theatre. Too loud to talk, too many people too high to say anything that is actually profound. There isn't nearly enough substance to it. But if you planted some immersionist actors in a rave setting and had them perform unbeknownst to the crowd, then you'd have the kind of guerilla theatre that could turn heads.
