Blackkat is a collective of artists, dancers, DJs, and activists that has been throwing parties in New York City since 1996. Our events seek to provide an alternative to mainstream American culture, a culture that is increasingly sexist, racist, classist, nativist, and consumption-oriented. We try to create a community through our events. We try to make them places where people will talk to each other, be inspired, learn something, and have fun. With our events, we seek to create a space in which activists can relax and be entertained without feeling as if their support of the event is contradicting or compromising the social justice work that they do. We also seek to create a space in which people who know that they want more than vapid mainstream entertainment, but may not quite be able to articulate why or what it is that they do want can find something to satisfy that unindentifiable emptiness left by isolating bars and lounges. Our events are participatory, they are created not just by the Blackkat collective but by all the people who help us and inspire us and all the people who attend our events. That means you! 1-Speed Bike, a.k.a. Bottleskup Flenkenkenmike, is one of Broklyn's favorite friends and co-conspirators. Besides the fact that he's a righteous guy who sticks to his guns (or rather no guns policy) he is also talented, witty, and a ball to be around. He's just about everything you hope a Canadian would be. His real name is Aidan and his real job for the last 7 years has been drumming with the insanely-famous-for-an-indie-band band GSYBE! Some time ago in 1999 there was a bunch of friends addicted to electronic music and underground rave parties. They decided between themselves to organise a few specific parties under the guise "Association Ponctuelle de Banditos". This was the way to play and test their musical creations in front of the dance floor. After our second party we decided to stop organising because we were too busy making music. At this point, the Banditos electronic duo was ready to take their flight... If you want to know more about how we decided to choose the name "banditos", you may visit the very nice website of AC. Weisbecker or try to grab a copy of his hilarous book "Cosmic Banditos" Our influences, a soft mix of breakbeat, new wave and low fidelity chip sound.
