the basic idea is that the second drive mirrors your system drive, so when your system needs a file it can access it from two different drives at the same time, thereby making it twice as fast.. and since your computer's slow component is the hard drive, increasing drive speed makes for much faster responce when working with files.

heh, master/slave has nothing to do with raid.

raid is a motherboard feature that can do a bunch of different things. (ie. take all your hard drives and make them act as one, or make each drive mirror each other).

Apparently, RAID 1+0 is better than RAID 0+1 : " Mathematically, the difference is that the chance of system failure with two drive failures in a RAID 0+1 system with two sets of drives is n/(2n-2) where n is the total number of drives in the system. The chance of system failure in a RAID 1+0 system with two drives per mirror is 1/(n-1). So, using the 8 drive systems shown in the diagrams, the chance that losing two drives would bring down the RAID system is 4/7 with a RAID 0+1 system and 1/7 with a RAID 1+0 system. "

Unfortunately, it doesn't bring a step closer to actually implementing that on my system. Whatever. I'll concentrate on getting a less shitty porcessor before mingling with this.

raid isn't a mother board option. raid stands for redundant array of indepenent disks. You need a raid controller on your pc, on your mother board or on your hd controller card. It's primarily designed to allow a perfect mirror of an hd to recover from loss, or to create one large drive over several smaller drives.

umm, unless they have a raid controller (unlikely -> no) it has to be built-in to their mobo.. in my case and many other cases, it's a bios option..

never. which is why it is not built onto most motherboards. exceptions would be dual processor mb's as they have a heavy commercial use. I'ts like scsi - how many people have boards with onboard scsi? not many.
