I was rather surprised to see that-with all the cultural aficinados on ravewave- that there wasn't already a thread based on this "hot new Canadian" documentary.

Not to belittle the film with that comment. It is true to say, that it is rare to see a film produced in Canada to create such buzz and -not to forget- recieve such such lavish awards at many international film festivals.

The film I am talking about is Mark Achbars' (who co-directed the film with Jennifer Abbott and co-created it with writer Joel Bakan) "The Corporation".

According to certain laws, corporaitons are seen -or treated- as people. So, these three minds attempted to personify "it" with a human characteristic. The conclusion they arrrived to, was that these profit-orientated corporations were nothing less than psychopaths.

Boasting names such as Noam Chomasky and (ofcourse) Michael Moore and CEO's from various corporations making apperances in the film, to enlighten the common man on the true identity of corporations. This film has now hit the million-dollar mark, making it one of the most successful Canadian (documentary) films ever made.

Everyone can admit that there is a certain distress when contemplating about any type of major business wether it be Microsoft; Mcdonalds; or even Haliburton. The point is we all know there is something wrong. Things such as the growing numbers of dollars in CEO's bank accounts, that are equitable to the growing numbers of families at a poverty level. Such things as the diregard of the well being of other human beings; disregard of how the manage thier waste; and the way corporations attempt to grab as much money as possible by any means necessary: *cough* Martha *cough* Enron*.

From what I have heard, this is a "MUST SEE" and even goes as far as a being played at schools for educational purposes.

As one of my friends said - quoting Michael Moore: "Why do corporations fund films such as these? Do they honestly believe that after seeing such content that nobody will do something about this?".

To be honest, it would be great if an average-joe would would go out to participate in a active protest to show their contemp of these actions. But all I can say is that after a good blockbuster, there's nothing better to wash it down with than a Coke and a Bigmac.

I use McDonalds' washrooms to put on Halowe'en makeup for late October parties. That's basically it. I heard they make most of their money off their price markup of Coke and not their food, which is screwy enough.

The Corporation is indeed a must-see. Not because you're supposed to believe everything in there, but because it forces you to think a little more.

I think I could go on and on about the increasing polarization of political thought and the good-vs-evil rhetoric that everyone uses to describe power structures these days, but I'd rather not right now.

no, not really.
i like unbiased documentaries that actually give you ideas/answers/solutions to the problems, instead of capitalist bashing without just cause.

Really? Damn...

Then again, I also found that Bowling for Columbine was rather stretched-out and biased. But I still found it somewhat entertaining/informative. So now i suppose the question is wether or not to go and send $10 on this.

My friends and I were actually planning on going to see the movie tonight, but now I'm debating on if I should see a skinny guy turn fat, or see a "bad propaganda film on how bad capitalism is".

bowling for columbine was an entertaining movie for sure, but it was very biased. the corp wasn't entertaining and was biased.

supersize me on the otherhand was great, very entertaining and while biased (against fast food), i feel it was warranted.
