=)

BEHEMOTH

One of the classic examples of a so-called "Living Dinosaur" is an account taken from the Old Testament of the Bible. The word "behemoth", when translated from ancient Hebrew, literally means "kingly beast". The first official description of the Behemoth probably dates back to the book of Job, verse 40:15-19, of the Old Testament. In that text the Behemoth (also referred to as ENOCH) is the name given to a gargantuan, land dwelling animal, which is described thusly:

"Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox. Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together. His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron."

Written approximately 2,000 years before the birth of Jesus, the animal chronicled in the book of Job is considered by most Biblical scholars to be an imaginative interpretation of a large, modern animal, such as the elephant or the rhinoceros. There has been, however, some debate among traditional zoologists and theologians, which argue that - based upon the creature's description - the Behemoth was more likely to be an amphibious Nile dweller, such as the hippopotamus or the crocodile.

That having been said, the debate branches off into yet another sub-sect of scientists and researchers (particularly cryptozoologist and creationists, who, in this rare instance, make strange bedfellows), many of whom feel that the Biblical account may not be referring to what has become a commonly recognized African species at all, but something else altogether... something which most paleontologists would insist had became extinct long ago.

To many investigators, the Job text seems to be less like an exaggerated account of a large, land dwelling, African herbivore, and more in line with what an eyewitness description of a brachiosaurus or Apatosaurus might have been. In fact, one can easily draw comparisons between the depiction of the Behemoth in biblical texts and present day eyewitness testimony regarding MOKELE-MBEMBE.

The outcast academics (on both sides of the evolutionary line) who support this theory, refer back to the Old Testament text in order to more succinctly present their case. The first point made by these researchers is that cedars were some of the largest and most impressive trees in the ancient world. The muscular, trunk-like appendage described by Job hardly seems to correspond with the thin, reed-like tail of the elephant or the rhino, yet this analogy would accurately reflect the proportions (and estimated strength) of a diplodocus tail, as well as several other known sauropods.

The second point concerns the passage which states: "...he eateth grass as an ox." To many researchers, this corresponds perfectly with the vegetarian diet, which all sauropods almost certainly subsisted on. If religious teachings hold sway, then perhaps the world will be able to see the Behemoth first hand on CNN, as it was prophesized in the New Testament's "Book of Revelations" that this monstrosity would be destined for an apocalyptic battle with its sister beast the LEVIATHAN during the days of Armageddon (in Hebrew texts, the airborne ZIZ is also mentioned).

Whether one believes these Biblical accounts to be fact or fiction, the legends of the Behemoth continue to tantalize both ancient historians and fortean researchers alike, with there seemingly accurate reports of these supposedly extinct animals. Only by separating the wheat of "science" from the chafe of "dogma," can one truly understand the zoological significance of these Biblical reports.
