Suggestions For Good Sound Cards

v.2-1

Ok, in about three weeks, I'll be moving to my house and will have my very own music room in the basement set up with sound system, speakers and all. If all goes well, I ought to start spinning again and recording mixes.

Thing is, the onboard sound card in my computer sucks donkey balls dipped in horse shit so I ask any DJs on here either :

- what sound card do you currently have in ( or out in a case of an external card ) your computer ?

or

- what would you recommend I get for a good ( if possible inexpensive ) quality sound card - internal or external - to get decent output ?

Or heck, any input appreciated since I'm a totally noob in terms of sound card.

My current setup is two Gemini CDJ-203 CD players and a Numark DM925 mixer ( which should get upgraded eventually )

Thank you in advance. :)

If you don't need all the bells and whistles this is a great option..

Roland (cakewalk) UA1G

24bit 96khz for $99 and comes with a light version of Sonar (pc only) for recording.

For music production, it really depends on what you plan on doing with it. External instruments? mics? .. how many? .. simultaneously? .. dsp? .. routing? .. direct monitoring? .. live and studio? .. mac/pc? etc etc....

Theres alot of debate and everyones had mixed experiences, the important thing is you find something that works for you and you start making tunes a.s.a.p.

well, I only really need 1 mic in, 1 line-in, 1 line-out.

I have a Creative Sound-Blaster external, and I'm mostly producing with Fruity Loops. I was just thinking that a better sound-card that has a higher output, and can handle more frequencies, might give me better sound quality ... (and yes I know that it won't change shit if I don't master properly)

Here's the thing: I put 2 sounds together with a bunch of bass already on 'em, and I have to do all sorts of sweeping and tweaking to get 'em to not head into the red. Meanwhile, I've seen people with the big M-Audio type soundcards that throw 6 different sounds, all with alot of bass, and it handled fine, not even close to the red.

I've always thought that it was the soundcard's fault that I have a hard time controlling interfering frequencies (like, my snares are never loud enough, but a touch more and *oops*, in the red) but maybe it's just 'cause my output from my sound-system isn't high enough - that all my sounds should be much lower, and my master amp volume alot higher. But I don't know, it doesn't seem right, I feel that if I had a stronger soundcard, FruityLoops wouldn't be so sensitive.

Anyway, maybe I'm way off in thinking I need a better card ... o_O

ps. I know how to EQ and all that, but maybe it's just supposed to be more difficult than I'd like xD

I think by the sound of things, it's really more of a production process than a soundcard that you'd need.. Generally, when you're producing, you should keep all your channels as low as possible.. you should only come near the red once everything has been put together and mixed down and you're doing your mastering..

This has nothing to do with your soundcard. Its a phase/amplitude issue. The diagram below might help you understand the principle a bit more. In time you will learn to deal with these things. Eq, compression, panning, volume and phase alignment are your friends. You can learn a lot by bouncing your tracks and observing the wav form to see exactly what is going on. Many issues in a mix aren't necessarily obvious or even audible.

hmmm.. I know most of that stuff already, and work on it very hard. After many pointers from Mutante and Wally, my sound has improved 10 fold over the last 6 months ... I just feel like I have to do more sweeping and tweaking than I've seen others do to get the same result. I thought maybe my soundcard just wasn't handling all the frequencies, in the same way that some speakers are better than others ...

Ok, so I'll work even harder and bringing all my sounds down, EQing the shit out of every single frequency/sound, and jacking up my amp volume ...

Thank you guys! It's a question I've been curious about for a while, and most people tell me the same thing. On a note though, I don't want y'all thinking I suck at this xD I just need to make sure that I'm the one responsible for all the sound management, and that will save me money and displaced frustration.

goes back to the same old phrase: doing good, sounds great, but keep working at it ... xD

Erm, my recording experience so far involves an RCA cable running from my mixer to my PC and recording in Adobe Audition. I have close to nil recording experience, heck I can't figure out what post processing method to apply to a recorded mix, much less understanding what dsp and direct monitoring involves.

I have the intention of doing production at one point ( I've been wanting for years but put off by finding the proper softwares for what I want to do and fishing for samples ) but for now, it would only be for mixing, no instruments, perhaps one mic and that's basically it.

With this additional info, is Cakewalk still appropriate for what I intended to do ? I want to learn to do this right and you guy's I put, I feel I'm heading on the right path. :)

Thanks.
