Actually I think it is Michael Jackson who owns the rights to many beatles tunes, and as we know he is almost as evil as Walt Disney.

People shouldn't have to get corporate sponsorship in order to make money. The reason this is so is because the music industry is designed to fuck the artists and often sponsorship is the only way to make any cash. Once you are sponsored, you are basically at the whims of the company, they can threaten to break the contract if you make any music that offends them. At that point you freedom of speach has gone down.. If you are controlled this much by companies then it's almost like you have gone back hundreds of years with the patronage system where musicians were basically 'owned' by royalty/wealthy people. In this cause the artist becomes a patron to the corporation, and loses much of their connection with the common person.

If a company has any sort of power over you you have been compromised artistly... For example MIA could say she is against the exploitation of oil-rich countries, but then Honda could whisper in her ear that they gave her big money and to shut up if she wants to get any more of it...

Who here can honestly say they are not a 'Sell out', Unless you live in a cave, were all corporate sellouts. If MIA didn't sell the rights to her song, Honda would have hired some producer at a fraction of the cost to rip off her style. Like that Kmart commercial, it sounds like MIA, but it sucks and its about going back to school or something. Moby, who turned one album into like 1000 commercials said that when he sold his songs to car companies, he would take the money and donate it to environmentalist.

Based on MIA's lyrics, I would guess that she has a good social conscience, and is probably helping people out now that shes got more money.

well there are lots of artists who have had good careers and not had their art used as the background music for ads... For instance Tom Waits.. Although he still made lots of cash when people used his music without permission, thanks to lawsuits he filed.
