madforbrad: why do you think the gravity sound system sucks? I think its fine. And its not like we have not heard good sound systems so we cant compare. Remember for a while the stereo had the best sound system in america. I believe the Aria also got that nod for a while too.

As for 10$ parties: Try it, pay your dues (the djs too) and lets see if you break even.

I think the gravity is a very good thing. Lets do some thinking. Before raves as we know them, and up to now, promoting was a job that went like this: You made deals with club owners to handle a night every week/month/day or special one time events. Then you promoted that night to get ppl in. Your job was to get enough ppl in so that the club owner makes money selling his booze or whatever, and you made money on the entrance fee, somtimes split between the club owner and yourself. You didnt take care of sound systems, locations etc. You see this happening at many places, mini's parking nights for example.

So, you want to do this, but with techno music. You could not. No clubs in montreal wanted to do that. Until the gravity. Thats the whole point. Its a safe place, comfy, good sound, legal, etc. Its the dream a promoter wants. Forget about the 'illegal warehouse parties', thats dead. Why do you really need a different location? Ppl go to the same club every saturday. If ppl though: Hey, gravity always have killer nights on saturday. They'd go, event or not, flyers or not. Thats what promoters need to acheive. Make gravity a place to go wether or not you know something is happening there. Thats the tools you were given by the owner(s). They also took the risk.

I dont know them so i'm not saying that to help them out or anything fishy. Its how it is.

Why attempt a conversation here then ?

Besides, it could be worse : in most post-rave cities, only dance clubs are used for parties.

And as much as Gravity is overused, it could be worse : raves could be held upstairs at Dome or even at Millenium nightclub.

That's a fucking scary thought.

haha ysee, its not just the promoters... its the people. we're cheap.. or just..dont have the money to spend at the time of the party, or dont feel like spending more than 10 bucks..
so..
HA ha!

*throws head back in triumphant laughter*

but whateva, gravity doesnt serve alcohol.. im sure if they did, theyd make a lot more money, and people wouldnt mind going there as much cuz they wouldnt have to leave to get drunk, or smuggle in alcy, only to knock it back in a dark corner or a bathroom stall.

raves cannot be held in dome, for example, or venues that serve alcohol. when the city gives a venue a license to sell and serve alcohol, they also specify that the space must be clear from 3 AM to 8 AM (or some shit) in the morning. gravity couldn't sell alcohol unless they had a separate venue (such as stereo and sona bar's had) that closed at 3 AM.

the hardest part about throwing a party is finding a venue. if you want to serve alcohol (or allow people to drink it in your venue) it's virtually impossible to do it legally after 3 AM. if you don't serve alcohol then you have to worry about fire marshalls and the city, who's job is to protect the interest of the city, so if your event is large enough to get noticed by any merchants, clubs, established businesses, or if anyone hears noise or sees people on the street and calls the popo to complain, they can and will shut you down -you're not allowed making noise, disturbing people, etc, etc, and they will fine you and then kick everyone out. most likely by this time they will also bust you for various other infractions (legal capacity, inadequate fire exits being the most common, bla bla bla)

as a promoter myself, i think it's safe to say that the reason most promoters choose gravity is because by doing so, they don't have to go through all the hell and stress of finding a "legit" venue, or at least a venue that they are comfortable with. once you rent gravity, all you have to do is worry about DJs, flyers, and finding someone to work the door... sure, you have to shell out a bunch of cash, but much of the real stress of the party (legal matters, unpredicted costs) dissapears.

the sound at gravity used to be great, top notch, built my angel moraes who also did stereo's sound, and could have gained as much respect as stereo's system but... when angel left gravity he was super pissed and fucked the sound all up, and, most importantly, since there's no competent sound people at the club anymore, and since the club has no interest whatsoever in actually being a club, and since they don't put any money into maintaining the club, the sound system, the lights, or anything, the sound has steadily and consistently gone to shit. unfortunately... but ya, it's still loud, although usually some of the speakers are blown, or flicker on and off all night.

other than that i agree with whoever said stop bitching about it. if you don't want to go, don't. what makes a rave a rave? is it the fact that the event is illegal? unsafe? ... or is it the music ... ?? ... or, better yet, is it the fact that it stays open after 3 AM??? i mean, what the fuck is a rave anyways?? that's the question, really.
