Monogomy was not born by christianity, it's been the standard in most cultures since before christianty even began to develop. Polyamory is somethign everyone would like to enjoy, male or female without hurting other people. All these sultans with multiple wives, well the wives aren't allowed to touch anyone else and no one else is allowed to touch them. Those cultures don't truly accept polyamory, if they did, they'd all be allowed to fuck whoever, the men and the women, but the men would have the heads of an unfaithful woman and the man that dared touch her. Both parties are prone to jealousy like in any other cultures, the difference is the ones with the power make sure they can't be on the losing end. Sultans have so many wives they never meet most of them, and they stay virgins forever. Jealousy is a natural human emotion, sexual or not, it was not born with any religion, and no religion can change it's dynamics. I think it can work out in a relationship with two open-minded people or of course if you lock your partner in a dungeon, but the origins of monogamy are from one or two almost inseperable emotions. Even in completely isolated cultures there are tribes where jealousy is taken to such an extreme extent that they sew up their wives pussies and unstitch it everytime they wanna screw them again.

that's sorta what i was getting at. back in da day with patriarchal societies polygamy was common with men of power, as a sign of power and also as a mode of keeping their family in power by means of extending it to great lengths. and how about female circumcision??? that's even worse than the whole sewing pussy shut thing. it involves surgically removing the clitorris thus preventing women from ever enjoying sex - because we all know sex is bad right? not to mention it easily leads to infection and is incredibly painful. still a common practice in some african tribal cultures and sects of islam though...

What I was really trying to get at though is that as far as we know, in the history of mankind polygomy has never been embraced or accepted by a culture, for even in those cultures in which one half of the population encourages it, the very same half of the population just as equally condemns it. Therefore, there's no use using those cultures as an example of polygomy, since they demonstrate the ideals of both polygomical and monogomical standards equally, they cancel eachother out.

well of course those people with only one wife or worse yet none at all are going to condemn it. CUZ THEY'RE NOT GETTIN ANY :P at any rate, i think its been made clear that polygamy and polyamory are indeed very different though not necessarily mutually exclusive. i think Ian's comment that polyamory is a precept or conducive to polygamy is way off however.

The whole "free love" movement in the 60s was just an extension of sexism.. It was just a way where the guys could knock up as many women as they wanted (this was before aids so shit wasn't as intense).. But it's the women who had to deal with pregnency or whatever (I think abortion was still illegal in many places back then), while the guys just went off to find more free love and pot....

Actually, if you check your history, the birth controll pill is what sparked the "free love" sexual revolution. People could have sex with as many people as they wanted and NOT have anything unwanted to worry about. Before that, pregnancy is what kept people "in check".

polyamory usually means having relationships with more than one person, not just sex, and for both people, unlike polygamy. lots of people have sex with multiple partners. i think the point of polyamory is that you do tell eachother about it instead of cheating on eachother and hiding it.

I am sure it works for some and not others, just like monogamy. I mean, if a monogamous couple breaks up, nobody blames it on that.
