CANNABIS CAFE BOSS IS FREED

CANNABIS cafe owner Colin Davies was released on bail this afternoon
amid scenes of celebrations by campaigners.

The campaigner had been behind bars since November awaiting trial for
charges on importing and possession of cannabis.

More than 50 supporters cheered as Mr Davies came out of Minshull
Street Crown Court.

His first act was to light a hand-rolled cigarette on the courthouse
steps as he waved to the waiting crowd.

Stringent conditions have been attached to his bail, including a ban
on participating in or giving interviews about his case and his
campaign to have cannabis legalised.

But he was able to say to the MEN: "It is great to be out. The first
thing I want to do is to see my children and have an egg and bacon
sandwich. I want to say a big hello to everyone at K wing at
Strangeways.

"Strangeways is the Cinderella of this government. The conditions are
awful but the wardens work hard and try their best.''

Mr Davies is also banned from entering Stockport Metropolitan area or
the Dutch Experience - his Amsterdam-style "coffee shop.''

One of his supporters said: "Colin is a great guy. He has never hurt
anyone and it's a disgrace he has been kept in prison for so long
when he has been convicted of nothing."

"We all want Colin to know that we are still behind him one hundred per cent.''

The trial of Mr Davies is due to begin on June 24.

His solicitor Chris Hinett said: "Colin is delighted to be out and is
looking forward to the commencement of the trial.''
