OPPOSITION PROPOSES RANDOM DRUG TESTING PLAN

The Victorian opposition says drivers should be subjected to random drug
tests in a bid to reduce the road toll.

Opposition leader Denis Napthine says on-the-spot testing of drivers'
saliva would reveal whether that person has taken any of a number of
illegal substances or prescription drugs.

Under the opposition's plans, offenders would automatically have their
licences cancelled for 12 months.

Dr Napthine says almost one in four drivers that die on Queensland roads
are affected by illicit or other drugs.

Police and Corrections Minister Andre Haermeyer says the government has
introduced legislation to allow for drug-testing of drivers.

But he says making it a reality has been held up by the lack of a
sufficiently accurate testing system.
