LASTIMOSO WANTS DRIVERS IN MISHAPS TESTED FOR DRUGS

Land Transportation Office (LTO) chief Roberto Lastimoso has strongly
called for the expansion of drug testing to include motorists involved in
vehicular accidents.

In a statement, Lastimoso said a significant percentage of vehicular
accidents are related to the use of illegal drugs.

"Illegal drugs must not only be screened out from those applying for a
license, even professional motorists are prone to their ill-effects and
thus, must be monitored. Allowing the LTO to test motorists involved in
vehicular accidents for drug use will increase the government's ability to
fight this hazard," he said.

He called on the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), Traffic
Management Group (TMG) and the local police units to immediately recommend
to a drug testing center all individuals involved in vehicular accidents.

"The MMDA and PNP units are in the best position to apprehend
drug-dependent drivers. I strongly recommend that they take heed of this
proposal to make our roads safer and improve public safety," he said.

Lastimoso's proposal was met by strong support from its
partner-corporations. DrugCheck Phils., the country's largest drug testing
center, pledged immediate support for the recommendation.

John Catindig, DrugCheck Phils. general manager, said, "The LTO's
recommendation will provide the public a mechanism to monitor motorists
guilty of substance abuse. It is the perfect compliment to the mandatory
drug testing for license applicants."

In a related development, DrugCheck Phils. has announced the company's plan
to inaugurate the DrugCheck Phils. Foundation which will help
drug-dependent individuals to be referred to rehabilitation centers.
