JOIN THE PEACE WALK AND BE PART OF THE SOLUTION

We are working hard to organize the 6th annual PEACE walk (Drug and
Alcohol Prevention, Education, Awareness through Community Efforts).
The PEACE Walk is a community event where people come together to show
their support and encouragement for all ages to make informed healthy
choices. Through this event we will recognize, stand against and bring
awareness to, the many reasons people turn to drug and alcohol use to
cope. As a community we will encourage our children, youth and adults
to refrain from allowing these more difficult times to result in drugs
and alcohol weakening or destroying families, friendships, culture,
identity and personal successes/goals.

The PEACE Walk is being held Monday, November 14, at 6:30pm starting
in the Commons Room at Hope Secondary School. The walk will go from
the school to the park and back -- everyone will be carrying a glow
stick to commemorate those who are struggling with alcohol or drug
addiction and those who have lost their lives or loved ones.Glow
sticks will be provided or you can bring your own! There will be a
moment of silence at the Japanese Gardens. After there will be
refreshments, home baked snacks, and entertainment back at the school.

As part of the PEACE Walk we are creating a quilt that will hang on a
wall or in a window as public reminder of the effects of addiction and
substance use. The focus is on people who have been affected by drug
and alcohol use and/or misuse. The quilt will have squares that detail
someone who has lost their life or a loved one to substance
use/misuse. These will be called memorial squares. The quilt will also
have triangles that people can make a public commitment surrounding
substance use or prevention. For example, "I will not drink and
drive". In addition there will be a Name the Quilt Contest open to
participants at the Peace Walk and other community members.

At the Peace Walk participants will be able to create their own square
and/triangle to add to the quilt. As well as have the opportunity to
enter the contest. The quilt will also be at the Health Fair on Nov 19
for community members to add to the quilt and also enter the contest.
There will be a prize awarded for the most suitable name for the quilt.

Please join us in our VERY special evening and support our continued
fight against the impact of drug and alcohol misuse in our community.
AND TELL YOUR FRIENDS - let's make this year's PEACE Walk the biggest
yet!
