MUSEUM MULLS OVER FUTURE

Police will permanently shut the Nimbin Museum before this year's
MardiGrass unless new security cameras and fences are installed to
improve surveillance.

The Northern Star has learnt police will move to close the infamous
museum under the Restricted Premises Act unless their demands for
appropriate fencing and high-tech, outdoor security cameras are met.

If it is closed, it would likely be before the annual MardiGrass
rally in aid of cannibas law reform, which is scheduled to be held on
May 2 and 3.

Richmond LAC crime manager Steve Clarke confirmed negotiations with
the museum's Sydney-based owner were under way which could result in
the museum being shut altogether.

"As a result of a lengthy investigation there was some further
proposed court action under the Restricted Premises Act," he said.

"There's a consultation process under way with the owner, and police
are confident of an amicable resolution."

Work to install cameras and fencing began some time ago, but the
results were not to the satisfaction of police.

Two security cameras have already been set up inside the museum, but
new outdoor cameras are needed to meet police requirements.

Part of the fencing also needs to be changed to allow for
surveillance.

Sydney-based Richard Andary, whose company owns the premises, said he
could not comment, but did not condone any illegal behaviour there.

"The matter is with the solicitors," he said.
