The Countdown is on as Kmart Kids Race Against Drugs Rolls Into Minneapolis

PRNewswire

TROY, Mich., July 14 /PRNewswire/ The tractors will be ready to roar
down the straightaway when the 1997 Kmart Kids Race Against Drugs caravan
rolls into Minneapolis on July 19 & 20, 1997.

Kmart Kids Race Against Drugs, a national program which tours major U.S.
cities throughout the country, provides a familyoriented racing tour
similar to the professional NASCAR and Indy racing car circuits. Children,
ages seven to 12, compete on modified lawn tractors to win scholarships and
other prizes as well as the chance to compete in the National Championships
in January 1998.

On Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20, Kmart Kids Race Against Drugs
takes place at the following Kmart and Super Kmart Center locations:

1100 West Highway 10 Anoka

400 East Traveler Trail Burnsville

4850 228th Street North Forest Lake

1450 University Avenue West St. Paul

245 East Maryland Avenue St. Paul

3201 White Bear Avenue White Bear Lake

The tracks will be open for action from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and
from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

THE EVENT:

Young drivers begin their quest in the training area where the racers learn
how to operate the uniquely equipped lawn tractors. Once training is
completed, the race begins and competitors test their driving agility as
they maneuver the tractors through a 75' x 185' specially designed race
track complete with hairpin turns, barriers, speed bumps, bridges and
tunnels. Racers will compete against a highly sophisticated time clock
which times the racers right down to a hundredth of a second.

Kids participate in the fun freeofcharge. Kmart will donate $5 for each
participating child to the local D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)
agency. D.A.R.E. representatives will be trackside interacting with
children and their families to educate them about the dangers of drug abuse.

Entrants will compete in one of three age categories: 78 year olds, 910
year olds and 1112 year olds. The driver with the fastest time in each age
group in each market will advance to the National Championships in Orlando,
Florida, in January 1998. Kmart will send each winner and three family
members to the event. Grandprize winners from each age group will be
awarded a $10,000 college scholarship annuity which matures on their 18th
birthday.

Kmart Kids Race Against Drugs was developed through The Kmart Family
Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed at educating and preventing drug
abuse. In 1996, Kmart Kids Race Against Drugs, through The Kmart Family
Foundation, donated a halfmillion dollars to local drug abuse prevention
charities throughout the country including D.A.R.E. and RAD (Race Against
Drugs).
