The Federal Government will today reject recommendations from two major
reports that call for tobacco advertising to be banned at all sports. The
Federal Minister for Health, Dr Wooldridge, said yesterday it would be "a
great pity for Australia to lose a number of events that were of
international significance" by excluding tobacco companies from sponsorship
deals. His comments come before the Government's expected response today to
the Herron report on tobacco, tabled in December 1995, by a Senate
committee, chaired by Senator John Herron. The report made 39
recommendations including the phasing out of exemptions for tobacco
sponsorship by the year 2000, banning smoking in enclosed places, listing
tobacco as a poison, selling cigarettes in generic packaging, heavy
penalties for selling tobacco to children, restricting cigarette sales to
specialist shops and a ban on vending machines. The Minister will also
release, but not respond to, the Rassaby report, which deals with banning
tobacco ads at sporting events.
