WASHINGTON Two months after the US House voted to allow the deployment
of up to 10,000 troops along the Southwest border, lawmakers reaffirmed
their support Friday. On a 261150 vote, the House endorsed an effort
by Rep. Jim Traficant, DOhio, to ensure that the negotiators hammering
out the final version of next year's defense bill in a HouseSenate
conference committee include the troops measure. The Senate didn't include
a similar troops measure in its bill. Opponents said if more manpower is
needed, Congress should find the funds for new Border Patrol agents instead
of using troops untrained in law enforcement techniques.
