Dutch police arrest Guerin murder suspects

AMSTERDAM (Reuter) Dutch police arrested two Irishmen in Amsterdam Friday
in connection with the murder last year of Dublin journalist Veronica
Guerin, who was widely believed to have been killed because of her
reporting about drug dealers.

A police spokesman said Ireland had already requested their extradition.

The arrests took place early in the evening in the Damrak, a main road in
central Amsterdam. The arrested men were a 31yearold referred to by
police by the initials B.M. and 39yearold referred to as J.T.

Neither was armed.

Guerin, a journalist at Ireland's Sunday Independent, was shot dead in a
Dublin street. She was believed to have been threatened by members of drugs
gangs because of her investigations.

The spokesman declined to reveal how Dutch police were aware that the two
were suspects in Guerin's murder.

The two arrested men are also being held on suspicion of membership of a
criminal organization involved in the drugs trade.
