THE ROAD TO FREEDOM

RE: "DRUGS a 'scourge' Police chief denies decriminalization support,"
(April 21). No one should be surprised that Calgary police chief Christine
Silverberg opposes any move to reduce the number of activities for which
Canadians are fined and/or imprisoned. Don't look for any thoughtful advice
from handsomely paid senior police officers about how attempting to enforce
an unenforceable law diminishes public re-spect for law enforcement. Don't
expect law enforcement officers to point out the lesson of Prohibition: That
prohibiting drugs does more harm to families and children than the drugs
themselves. The reason for all this hesitancy to reveal the truth?

Fewer crimes in the Criminal Code may translate into more ex-cops pumping
gas for a living. The road to freedom unfortunately does not pass through
the ranks of Canada's police forces.
