CRYSTAL-METH SCOURGE NEEDS POLITICAL DEBATE

The horrors of crystal meth have been well-documented in this newspaper.

So we applaud the initiative by City of Vancouver NPA mayoralty
candidate Sam Sullivan to put it at the top of his drug-policy agenda.

The NPA is proposing everything from a crystal-meth task force to
drug courts, a controlled-substances bylaw and a Methwatch program
for merchants.

Of course, their proposals are self-serving, coming as they do during
a municipal election campaign.

But that does not mean they are irresponsible, as Vision Vancouver
mayoral candidate Jim Green claims.

What would be the height of irresponsibility would be to gloss over
what is clearly a scourge for many B.C. families.

Indeed, we think that the more political debate there is about this
destructive drug the better.
