FIRST STEP IN METH FIGHT

It is well that the provincial government has established a task force to
co-ordinate efforts to fight crystal methamphetamine. Though not yet a
problem in Alberta to rival use of crack cocaine or marijuana, the effects
upon those addicted to it are peculiarly pernicious: If it is possible to
impede the production and marketing network before it becomes deeply
embedded here, it makes eminent sense to do so.

Nobody should assume this will be easy. The drug is easy and cheap to make,
using common household materials. And, jurisdictions that have made inroads
on local production have still had to contend with supplies brought in from
elsewhere.

However, doors that are easy to close should be slammed shut without delay.

One such is the easy availability of key ingredients ephedrine and
pseudoephedrine, which are found in non-prescription cold remedies. A
recent Herald survey found that despite their known utility to illegal drug
producers, they continue to be widely available without restriction in city
pharmacies.

Step 1, in the fight against crystal meth: Regulate these medicines back
behind the counter. There really is no reason not to.
