WHY THE SUDDEN INTEREST IN SAM SULLIVAN'S PAST?

The sudden police interest in Vancouver mayor-elect Sam Sullivan's
misguided foray into the city's drug underworld is ill-timed,
unfortunate and suspicious.

In what he freely admits today was an error of judgment, Sullivan
gave an addict money for an illegal drug and allowed the man to smoke
it in his vehicle.

The incident was comprehensively rehashed throughout the recent civic
election campaign.

Now the RCMP, at the request of the Vancouver Police Department, says
it is looking into the circumstances surrounding Sullivan's actions.

The Mounties should wrap up this particular inquiry without delay.
It's years out of date.

Why should Sullivan have to begin his new job under this cloud?

He shouldn't -- unless, of course, someone has an axe to grind.
