APPLICATIONS TAKEN FOR MEDICINAL POT ID

San Mateo County's Health Department began accepting applications
this week from patients who want medical marijuana identification
cards, which can help them persuade law enforcement officials that
they are using the drug for medicinal purposes.

Applicants must prove they are residents of the county -- through a
vehicle registration form, a utility bill, or a rent or mortgage
receipt -- as well as have a driver's license or other
government-issued photo ID card. They also must provide a note from a
physician prescribing the use of marijuana.

The fee is $45, but Medi-Cal beneficiaries will receive a 50 percent
discount. People must apply in person weekdays at Public Health Vital
Statistics, 225 37th Ave., San Mateo. The office closes for lunch
from noon to 1 p.m. daily, and at 4 p.m. Thursdays.
