So, all the supporters of medical marijuana are really a homogeneous
bevy of crafty, covert drug legalizers (Charles Krauthammer, Opinion,
Feb. 9). Dream on.

Nay, I assure you, the diversity of opinion among the 56 percent of
California voters who supported Proposition 215 is enormous.

On my own part, I have been forthright with my view on this. Yes, I
favor legal pot for any and all adults who prefer it. I also advocate
the legalization of all plants, including coca and poppies. But it would
be delusional to imagine that the current legal status of medical
cocaine and medical opiates, such as morphine and codeine, somehow makes
it more probable that coca and poppies will be made legal.

Our society has no difficulty distinguishing between medical and
recreational opiates. Why should marijuana be any different?

It was medical marijuana on the ballot in California, not other drugs,
not recreational use. And medical marijuana was the subject of a Senate
Judiciary Committee hearing, attacks by drug czar Barry McCaffrey,
numerous Opinion section articles, and letters I have written of late.

Krauthammer calls this hiding. I call it staying on topic.
