A Decade of Dance:
Tiga & Ivan Smagghe re unite for the first time since May of 2003 with a new night that will happen only 4 times a year. Ivan will be first guest in the new series of late night sessions that will focus on longer more developed DJ sets. In case you are unfamiliar with Ivan, he is the founding member of the Paris duo Black Strobe, (Me & Madonna, Paris Acid City) & is busy touring in support of his new mix CD out on Eskimo Recordings. The new night will showcase a long awaited return for Tiga to the after hours scene where there is simply more time to DJ, playing till 3 am doesn't always offer enough time to properly develop a set. Tiga & Ivan will be playing together for about 8 hours, giving themselves enough time to try new things, be more spontaneous & more experimental. Pleasure From The Bass will be hosted by Gravity, a new after hours club that boasts one of the finest sound systems in the world in a beautiful, intimate setting. Musically expect everything, a proper mix of true eclectic modern house music, acid, electro, deep techno, robot disco & more... Pleasure From The Bass will begin March 26th at 2 am.

Come and check out (and support) our internet-based music magazine which targets a young, music-savvy, primarily Canadian readership, although our contributors include correspondents (and therefore readers) from Ontario, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan and South Korea. Still, we plan to fill what we consider to be an otherwise unmet need in the North American music market: although similar internet publications (such as Pitchfork Media) exist, they tend to be based in and therefore focus on the United States.

From our base in Montréal, at the cultural crossroads of Europe, English Canada, and the United States, our bilingual publication will provide a young, music-loving readership with intelligent, informed critiques of both new releases and overlooked or rare albums. We, believing that good music is good music, intend to avoid reinforcing the "underground/mainstream" dichotomy and to ignore the customary inclination towards strict genre segregation. Rather, we will focus on providing exposure for music which otherwise would not be as well-known.

We also focus on: Modern Art, Music Software, Cinema, Fashion, the local Montréal scene.

I LOVE NEON – HISTORY

Neon began as a concept in late 1997 at DNA Records where John & Tiga worked, ordering & selling techno & electro
from the likes of Dopplereffekt, The Advent, Anthony Rother & the Hacker. Electro had existed as a musical genre
since day one, but hadn’t really stepped up to the limelight like it’s most current incarnation, & important labels like
Gigolo Recordings & Montreal’s own Turbo Recordings were still in their infancy. DNA was looking for a weekly venue
to house their eclectic mix of tastes, so along with long time partner & friend Justin, John & Tiga began to look for the
perfect club night, one that would showcase minimal techno/house & electro. The challenge was that Techno was
getting a little boring, everyone was getting a little tired of minimal & modular, everything seemed to lack character,
after-hours clubs were dull & people weren’t partying at all, just watching the DJ, DNA’s club night was to only go till 3
am, & showcase a new sound that had the hard edge of techno, mixed with the crossover potential of pop & punk,
something people could really have fun listening too. The first round of club nights were called Cobra, their were only 4
Cobra events in all, all four featured Tiga & Thomas as the DJs & John as the Host, the events were somewhat of a
success, but never really settled in to a permanent home until finally Justin made a Thursday night deal at the now
defunct Jai bar that would later put Montreal on the electro map, or as the Hacker would later put it, “Montreal is the
Electro capitol of north America.”
After weeks of planning, Justin came up with the name NEON, & the night began week after week & the following
began to grow. Eventually NEON would outgrow Jai & take a break, Tiga was touring & NEON would have to wait
until November 24th, 2001 where NEON teamed up with the S.A.T & launched the first in a series of nights dedicated
to alternative electronics, mainly Electro. The first event was to celebrate Tiga’s MIX CD, “American Gigolo” and was a
huge success, drawing a total of 600 people. More important than the amount of people in attendance was that NEON
had officially established itself as the leader in Montreal's fledgling Electro scene.
NEON would later book the likes of Miss Kitten & The Hacker, Crossover, FPU, Zyntherius & draw over capacity
crowds to all of it’s events.

EVENTS

[ All of the NEON events have existed without any corporate sponsorship & have eluded all politics that surround usual
club nights, there are no door people who choose who gets in & there are no bouncers guarding the DJ booth & VIP
rooms, crowds are respected & they show respect back, NEON has received countless offers to be bought & has
turned everyone down, every event is done with heart & respect for the people who support it, and as the people
involved do not make a living as promoters, this will never have to change.]

On May 17th 2003 NEON will host the 6th in a series of nights dedicated to alternative electronics, mainly Electro & Techno. Neon is not a regular monthly event; it happens out of pure necessity, & only when the perfect booking opportunity arises. The first was to celebrate the launch of Tiga’s "American Gigolo" mix CD and was a huge success, drawing a total of 600 people. More important than the amount of people in attendance was that NEON established itself as the leader in Montreal's fledgling Electro scene, setting the standard for others to follow. For the second event, NEON booked Gigolo Recordings artists Miss Kittin & The Hacker, direct from Europe on their first North American tour, they attracted an unprecedented 900 + people over the course of the night. The third NEON was one of the most remembered & talked about nights in recent memory, thanks to Tiga & Zyntherius’s 5-hour DJ marathon & Crossover’s brilliant LIVE performance. I love NEON 4 showcased some of the hottest new names in techno, Tiga, FPU & Chromeo, along side Montreal’s Jordan Dare. NEON took a break & didn’t re appear until Feb 6th @ Mille end, where Tiga launched his newest mix CD on Studio K7 to a over capacity crowd.

I love NEON returns with a new venue, better sound & a beautiful new venue, Usine C. Don’t miss it.

BLACK STROBE / BIOGRAPHY

Emerging, bleary-eyed and snaggle-toothed into daylight from the Parisian underground, meet the vampiric Black Strobe. Quel est Black Strobe? Black Strobe are producer, Arnaud Rebotini and DJ Ivan Smagghe. A studio wizard and a nightlife animal. A metal geek and a disco freak. A classical buff and a dancefloor diva...you get my drift? Put this pair together, and you're on the receiving end of skewed, fucked-up beats and aural wet dreams.

Rebotini is a rated and respected producer, into his Boulez and Kirk/Malinder. Smagghe frequently sets Paris's dancefloors alight with his idiosyncratically renowned sets. Previously a key player with France's Radio Nova and a member of Volga Select, he chops out enough perverted disco to corrupt dancefloors everywhere, while Arnaud Rebotini's soundscapes lend a dark and sinister vibe to the proceedings. Output's tradition of classic modern music with a dark and scary edge grows stronger with each releaseÖ Originally signed to the Source France label, their debut track Paris Acid City appeared on the first (recently re-released) Source Lab compilation.

The following single ëInnerstringsí was released on Output in 2000. ëInnerstringsí predated the electroclash revival and received amazing reactions from DJ Hell, Tiga, Andrew Weatherall, Laurent Garnier and many more. Establishing themselves as the worldís most respected dark electro disco duo with their second Output released single Me & Madonna (featuring the vocals of premier Parisian DJ Jennifer) their debut album is eagerly awaited by many dedicated music followers and DJ's alike.
