Well, this seems to have gotten kind of derailed.

If you would like to participate great! I would really appreciate your stories, the world should hear the weird, strange, funny and crazy stuff that happens while throwing these parties, djing and attending raves!

If you don't want to participate - you don't have to!

Send me a pm and we can figure out how to get your story out there. You can also email me here: dtarave@repenttokyo.com

I'm collecting the funniest / saddest / most frustrating / worst experiences people have had in the rave scene for my website. It's not really along the lines of people who OD'd or people who were arrested, but more the kind of thing that you look back on now and you can't believe happened, that were really crazy, or really bizarre. The scene is FULL of these kinds of stories. You can take a look at the beginnings of the collection here: [ www.repenttokyo.com ]

I would like to interview anyone who would like their story to be told. Names can be changed to protect the innocent, if that is what you prefer. If you would prefer to send me your stories in written form, or note form, that is great too. Think of it as kind of an oral history of scene weirdness.

Thanks in advance to anyone who would like to participate.

what tipsy said - there is no way to "internationally" register a trade name. you have to register it in each individual country, in order to protect it. so the fact is, unless they have registered it in canada, prior to your use, they have no basis for sueing you.

several times i have been booked for parties where timeslots changed, or the gear was so bad that we had to re-wire the mixer to get it to work, during the set...and i have had contracts that were not respected. it still comes down to, what good is a signed contract if one of the parties chooses not to respect it? what do you do in that instance?

a 25 dollar "contract" with a local promoter isn't worth the paper it's written on. Who would spend time and money in court to prosecute over a 25 dollar contract? If you don't trust the local promoter to pay you, then a contract isn't going to change that. Just don't play the show if you don't trust the promoter.

I agree - when stuff like that happens, it's up to the markets to normalize. I guess what usually happens is that bigger dollar DJ's will only play the largest parties in your area, the Cream and bal en blanc style events, and underground events have to start developing a new roster of acts they can book from. These new acts are usually more boutique-style guys who are famous in a particular genre but don't have a huge crossover following.

Then of course, once you have paid to develop their careers with solid bookings and good publicity, they start to ask for too much money as well, and you have to let them go - it's a vicious cycle, hehe. but there are DJ's who have not fallen into this trap of pricing themselves out of steady work. Lenny Dee is a perfect example. Omar Santana is another.

i understand and agree with what you are saying, but not all big name dj's are egotisical.

Update » mtl_mtl wrote on Fri Jul 27, 2007 @ 1:41pm
regarding what big name dj's chose to charge - betty haze is right, it really depends. their prices are variable, depending on the day, the city, the size of the party, and their relationship with the promoter...but i think it's important to remember that most of the time, a DJ will charge what the market will bear as a price, and I think that's a fair thing to do considering that this is how they earn their living.

A car would be less expensive than a van, a van less expensive than an RV. Based on the assumtion that more people would be riding in a larger vehicle, thus costing the whole less considering they would be sharing the cost equally based on the capacity of the vehicle, and also considering the space the vehicle would occupy.

cars do a lot less damage to a field than vans and rv's. if it's damage related, you have to do it on weight.

I was looking for the track - Tipsy found the organ sound in the Quincy Jones track, I thought part of the backing track was from the Super Sessions song, but I am no longer so sure.

The Super Sessions version is an improvement on Donovan's, in my opinion.

It's from a song called "Season of the Witch" by a band called Super Session, 1968. It was a collaboration among Buffalo Springfield's Stephen Stills on guitar, bluesman Mike Bloomfield on guitar and Al Kooper.
